3days post op, uncontrolled pain, problems with provider

Hi sisters,

I had a "total robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy, singular salpingo-oophorectomy and right salpinectomy" on Thursday January 19th.

I am 42 years old and they were looking for cancer. NONE WAS FOUND!!! WOOT!!!

I am having some frustration however with a lot of things, one of which is my provider's NP. I have called a couple times over the weekend and each time she seems more annoyed. Also, I have gotten some wrong information from her and I can't get a hold of anyone else until tomorrow. However, she is the primary contact in the office as well.

I don't know how I can talk to my provider about this without honkerblonking the NP off and making my issues worse.

I am having uncontrolled pain issues r/t some problems I am having with pain meds. I am afraid to call her now, so I have been uncontrolled for over 24 hours now.

thoughts??

can you switch providers within that office?you are going to have to see them about 2-3 times without any complications so i would try to switch.are you only seeing a nurse practitioner and not a doctor?could u reqest to actual dr instead?remember you're gonna be stuck with this dr. but i would request to be switched cause remember this-YOU ARE PAYING THEM NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.you are their customer.you may have to remind them of this.i think we all forget this but they're working for us.good luck let me know how things turn out.thank god no cancer!!!

Can't do anything until tomorrow. But, I will insist on speaking with the doctor. She has been amazing! It's just that the NP is on call for all of them over the weekend.

thanks for reminding me that THEY work for ME!!

I had such a great rapport with my nurse that I didn't need to talk to the doctor.
If I were you, I would ask to speak with the doctor.
If the doctor doesn't call you back within a reasonable amount of time. Go to his or her office during business hours and demand to she him or her.

I kept my phone calls to a minimum, but used the email instead.
This worked out really well.

Re: 3days post op, uncontrolled pain, problems with provider

I really wish I had the email option right now. But, I will just make sure to talk to my doctor tomorrow and just sweat it out tonight. Not much more I can do...don't think an ER visit will do much.

Any ideas of how to approach my doctor on some of the things that have happened with her NP?

That's just terrible. You've got to be honest with your doctor about the probs with the NP. Might not help you, but it can help future patients.

Re: 3days post op, uncontrolled pain, problems with provider

I would just try to be calm and pretend that you like the nurse....but she doesn't respond to your concerns or problems.
She doesn't return your phone calls in a timely manner.

Make a list of what has been your health concerns since your hysterectomy, when you called the nurse, and how long it took her to respond.
Ask the doctor if she has any other suggestions in order to get the help you need in a timely manner.

Thanks. I'll work on that. The problem is, she has gotten back to me fine, but the interactions have been strange and inaccurate. So, I will put as positive a spin on it as possible and just go from there.

Re: 3days post op, uncontrolled pain, problems with provider

i loved my dr. but as time went on i felt that him and his office really kept me in the dark about things i could do and not do.but the man did a good surgery cause as far as actual surgical pain,i didnt have a lot,but i think alot of dr's really forget they're working for us.i hate to hear when women cant bond to their dr's.it is so sad cause we're kinda stuck with them for a while.i am glad dr. never made me see his N.P. cause i wanted to always see dr. and not nurse.he was very hands-on instead of handing me over to his n.p.if you dont want too see N.P. make this clear to avoid any conflicts.and yes his n.p. did give me inaccurate info that he corrected in front of her,so he really made me feel like he cared,N.P. wasnt thrilled with getting corrected by him,but they work for the patient period.

Re: 3days post op, uncontrolled pain, problems with provider

well, sadly, I guess my Dr and the NP are good friends. I was basically dismissed in regards to that communication. I'm sad, because I think a lot of this is me. My head just hasn't been "right" since the surgery. Everything happened so fast...I only saw them twice before surgery. I never got a good chance to bond or connect with them (my fault mostly). When I don't feel a connection, I tend to get oversensitive. Also, when I am sick and/or on pain meds, my own communication gets very very poor. So, I now need to apologize to my Dr and her NP and try to make things right. I need to let them know that I'm struggling a bit emotionally and that's what is making it so difficult. I didn't mean to make the situation worse, but it seems like I did.

I don't know what is going on with me emotionally right now, but it isn't feeling very good.

Thanks for the support everyone.

I don't have a problem with the surgery that she did. She is very good and she is very thorough btw.
