Post op 5 days and still in a lot of pain....NORMAL??

I had my hystorectomy done on the 22nd of Feb and I am still in quite a bit of pain! I have had a lot of surgeries and that included a tumor being removed out of my abdomen. This surgery is the most painful one I have had. Is that normal?? I also have Fibromyalgia. Could that be the reason it still hurts so much?? Any help would be great...I am so emotional, I think I am going crazy!!

Hey Gloria!
First of all,*BIG HUG*. I just want to say you are not crazy or alone and that extreme pain that far after surgery is not uncommon.
I had a complete hysterectomy on January 11th. I am almost 7 weeks out now and really the consistent pain has JUST stopped in the last week. I also have fibromyalgia and was told that was probably making my pain worse. I had a TON of trouble controlling pain. Especially at first. I was on very heavy pain killers non stop and still in tons of pain for the first two weeks and then I switched to t3s and then SLOWLY weaned off from there. I am still taking Advil and Tylenol occasionally for the pain.

I remember feeling SO discouraged when I read other peoples recovery reports because I felt like I was SO far behind on my recovery and maybe I would never heal. So most of all I want you to know that you are not alone!!!

Re: Post op 5 days and still in a lot of pain....NORMAL??

P.s. I have had two VERY painful and difficult child birth deliveries previously and without a doubt my pain post hysterectomy was worse than both. And I really didn't think that was possible. I honestly thought I was going to die for the first couple weeks after surgery. I know it is brutal. But hang in there Hun!!!! It WILL get better!

Re: Post op 5 days and still in a lot of pain....NORMAL??

The first week is absolutely hell week. And while it doesn't magically get better on day 7 after day 7 you start to notice each morning you wake up feeling a little bit better. I am on post op day 11 and just starting to feel like myself. I can go all day without meds, but come night time the pain returns, the swelling gets worse and I get pretty emotional, so I still medicate before bed. Focus on the outcome and know that you are almost past the worst hump and each day should bring improvement, even if it's only slight. (((hugs))) I'm with ya sister, but you're on the other side!
