Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

I had my surgery just over five weeks ago. I had a hysterectomy due to a huge (11 cm) ovarian cyst and some extensive fibroids. During the Da Vinci procedure they discovered some serious undiagnosed endometriosis and switched to abdominal.

I haven't had any menopause symptoms, but have heard about estrogen being stored in fat, which I have a good amount of.

With the endometriosis, plus a family history of breast cancer, I don't want to do hormones. My doctor is in agreement. They took both my ovaries as they were riddled with cysts.

Does this mean I am a ticking time bomb? Or has anyone out there dodged the menopause bullet?

Re: Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

We are all in surgical menopause once the uterus and ovaries are removed, which means no more menses. As far as getting the awful symptoms, time will tell. Hot flashes are a big hint that you are running low on estrogen. Some women do not get it very bad, but others do.

I think it is important to take calcium and vitamin D to keep bones strong and fish oil capsules for the heart and arteries. Exercise helps weight and moods.

If you get symptoms that you cannot handle then you need to see your doctor and see what alternatives to HRT there are.

Hopefully, you will only have mild symptoms if any. We are all so different when it comes to the symptoms.

Re: Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

The onset of my symptoms was literally within days, and the night sweats and hot flashes are very sporadic now. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but, for me, it hasn't been *too* bad. I can't have hormone therapy because I have endometriosis, but I have found a natural algae supplement that eases my hot flashes. That, and at a local natural /homeopathic remedy shop, the proprietor suggested a 'menopause' tea. I was skeptical of the tea, but after having a cup during a particularly sweaty hot flash, I found my symptoms eased. Of course, it may have been over by the time I brewed and drank the tea!

Re: Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

My hot flashes and night sweats came with a vengeance around the 3 month mark. I can not take HRT due to ovarian cancer.

Re: Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

My symptoms finally found me. Just insomnia and some not too terrible flashes. Not soaking the sheets any way. So far so good.

Re: Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

I have not had any real symptoms either. I had both ovaries removed and am not taking hormones because of endometriosis. Other than a few minor flushed feelings I have been lucky.

Good luck to you in your recovery.

Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

I am so glad I found this forum! I am 25 and just had a complete vaginal hysterectomy. My ovaries, tubes, and cervix included. Due to endometriosis, no hrt. A few days post op I started with night sweats and light hot flashes. Nothing too horrible. I kept feeling like I should be waiting for it to get worse. After reading some of the replies here I feel like I can be optimistic that it may not be so horrible! Thank you ladies :-)

Re: Waiting for Menopause. Will it come?

Thankfully, I haven't had any menopause symptoms and I believe it is because of my diet. I eat fish but no other meats, I juice veggies and drink wheatgrass regularly. I don't eat a lot of soy but occasionally tofu. An Asian woman once told me they don't have hot flashes and stuff....I'm walking and swimming anything to try to get back to normal. Good luck everybody.
