Re: wondering if anyone else has adeno without period pain/heavy periods?
Hi Cathb911
My GI was the doctor who has recommended the hyster along with the gyno. I have already had an colonoscopy, MRI, CT scan etc....that how they found the structure. The only other problem they ever found was this adenomyosis and enlarged uterus. Hopefully the hyster sister with digestive problems has gotten a second opinion as well. Most of my pain is coming from my retroverted uterus sitting on my nerves by my tailbone and rectum. So i am hopeful the hyster will work.

I felt pretty honkerblonked off about it all until the pain came back and now I'm ready to have it. I guess I must take whatever chance I can to be well. I have been in intermittent, chronic pain or 12 years, cant hold down a job and have gone through all my savings and am in debt. I also feel angry b.c I could have had a hyster ten years ago before my life was wrecked.
I must apologise for not answering personally each reply- I cant seem to do it on here for some reason.
Thanks again for your help and support- you cant imagine how much it means to me

Re: wondering if anyone else has adeno without period pain/heavy periods?
Dear Hystersisters,
thanks again so much for your replies. This problem I have been having is mid-cycle, was for about 3 days but now about a week or more. It started after a termination. My symptoms are bloating first, then gas, then pain having BMs. Excruciating pain. Over the years it has been getting worse and it always strikes the same time every month and I am fine the rest of the month- completely normal. My mother had a TAHBSO at 51 without HRT and her health declined dramatically to the point she needed heart surgery at 54. Of course it might be a coincidence, but although she had no menopausal symptoms, everything went haywire after the hyster. This is why I am wanting to keep my ovaries unless they must come out. I have seen 2 gastroenterologists and several gynaecologists until I found a good one. In the meantime we did find I was lactose intolerant and had a duodenal ulcer- so some improvement there.
I wanted to try more alternatives but when the pain is bad I'm ready to take anything out. I have noticed that many GPs place very little value on ovaries etc and more and more evidence is coming to light that they perform important functions after menopause. I just read "A gynecologists second opinion" by William H Parker MD. He also recommends keeping ovaries if possible and even says that the uterus secretes prostacyclin which may have functions in the body we dont yet understand. It's the best book I've read about female problems.
I will see the gynaecologist again. I think I'm ready to give up trying anything else. And ive put on a lot of weight.

Re: wondering if anyone else has adeno without period pain/heavy periods?
Confused.
So sad you said your doctor places very little importance on ovaries. You know that is not true, so in this case you need to fight for them at all costs. Unless they are diseased, or you have a family history of cancer they should stay in my opinion. My Mom and my doctor both sort of laughed at me , as I was quite attached to my ovaries. My doctor was instructed to leave them, and if she felt they needed to be removed she was to come into the waiting room and explain and get permission from my DH fist. My DH's number one job while was in surgery was to fight for my ovaries at all costs. I fully explained to him what acceptable reasons for removal would be.My ovaries were fine. I was able to keep them, and after surgery my doctor presented me with a photograph of them. They had eggs inside as I must have been ovulating on surgery day. It made me smile.

Re: wondering if anyone else has adeno without period pain/heavy periods?
I am brand new here and your post was the first I read. I recently had my family doc refer me to a GYN after suffering with spotting throughout my cycle and post coital bleeding....both for almost 4 years. I have had other GYN's tell me it was just hormonal and change my BC pills. My appointment last week showed otherwise. The new doc thought immediately that my endo was back (had it removed in Spring of 2005 in an effort to conceive). I had absolutely no symptoms, but family history. I was eaten up with the stuff. Anyway, the new GYN sent me for an ultrasound that showed my uterus was quite enlarged and very "boggy". I am scheduled for a biopsy tomorrow to prove/disprove her adenomyosis theory. If this is what it is she recommends a hysterectomy. I am feeling very conflicted. I do not have pain so I am lucky in that sense, but I do have to deal with spotting all the time and bloody sex (sorry if tmi). I also have had cases of EXTREME bloating on and off the last 6 months. Apparently this is another symptom. Since there is no cure, it seems a hysterectomy is the most common treatment if symptoms are bad enough. I am worried and scared...afraid of making the wrong decision.

Re: wondering if anyone else has adeno without period pain/heavy periods?
Yes, it's a big decision. Most of us are very worried and scared when trying to make a decision as big as this. It doesn't sound like this is an emergency, though, so give yourself time to research it so you can make a decision YOU are comfortable with.
I had unsuspected adenomyosis and a little endo. I'm learning they are both related to estrogen dominance, and progesterone suppression. I've had one doctor tell me to take estrogen, but not progesterone, and another tell me the opposite. So it's nice to look into it a bit yourself before you make any big decisions.
Look at traditional medical sites, plus look up info on hormone balance, natural treatment, or foods to help with endo or adeno. You'll get a better feel for what's happening in your body, how you can help yourself right now, and what you want to do about your diagnosis.
Often we take care of the immediate problem by surgery or medication and then continue to do what caused it in the first place. But the imbalance just goes on to affect something else. It's nice to work with your body, understand the things it needs and the way it's supposed to work. And that's a big job--women are complicated creatures!
It sounds like your gyn is exploring options. That's good.
Hope all goes well with the ultrasound. :

Re: wondering if anyone else has adeno without period pain/heavy periods?
Such great advice shortnsweet! I am going to take that and run back to my acupuncturist and shiatsu goddess and also go talk to a natropath/dietician once I am properly on my feet again.
It is a huge decision, especially if you feel like you have options to wait it out (ie not too much pain and the other adverse effects of the dis-ease are not overwhelming for you). But shortnsweet is so right - read up on it, research, ask around, look around here and see what you can learn frazier75 - get second opinions, thirds if you want, and consider what it is you really lose by considering a hysterectomy and what it is you gain too. (ie no more bloody sex sounds like it falls on the good benefits side of the ledger!)
Good luck with your biopsy. Keep in touch!
