Anti-embolism stockings? How long should I wear them now I am home?

I was sent home wearing a pair of anti-embolism stockings and when in hospital was told sternly that hospital policy was for everyone to wear them all the time they were in. I was told when I was leaving (24 hours after my op) that I should continue to wear them. How long should I be wearing them as a routine for when I am in bed?
Thanks.

I was told by the hospital to wear them for 2 weeks but I have read different things since then though. Some people say 4 weeks and some say 6 weeks. I think as long as you are a bit more active and getting up and walking about regularly you can take them off. I took them off at 2 weeks which was 4 weeks ago and I've been fine. Good luck with your recovery x

Wow, I wasn't sent home wearing them. Had the inflatable ones off in the hospital all the time since I was in and out of bed. I also had Lovenox shots while inpatient. I never really rested in bed at home though. Check with your doctor how long he wants you to wear them especially if your active.

Are you having injections of (or taking orally) blood thinners? I had injections for 2 weeks so figured that was enough. I only wore the stockings while in the hospital and a couple of days after I got home because I just found them so uncomfortable! I'd listen to what your doctor says though!

My nurse said as long as I was up and moving on a regular basis (at least hourly) then there was no need to wear them.

I wish they had sent me home with some! A week post op I had such horrible fluid build up in my feet I couldn't walk! The nurse asked if I had a pair and said I should probably have worn them for a week. I spent 2 days on my back with my feet up alternated with painful walking. Call the nurse tomorrow and ask, but in previous surgeries I had them for a week or two.

My nurse said wear them until I am back to my regular activity level. Does that mean when I go back to work?

IF I were you, I would call the docs office and ask what his recommendations are for you. He knows you and your case best.

Many thanks for all the replies and advice.
No blood thinners and yes to keeping them on for a while yet. It is still Sunday over here so I cannot speak to my doc but I can ring the hospital ward for advice, which I will do.
Warm wishes to everyone x
