Silicone Healing Gel .. Am I Allergic?

Hi everyone

Im just into my 5th week of healing, and have been constantly using a Silicone Healing Gel on my vertical incision since day 11.

My scar is showing signs of Keloids, is still bright red, feels tight and itches a lot, although it has totally healed.

Im just wondering whether it is possible to be allergic to the gel?

Im thinking about not using it to see if things improve.

Re: Silicone Healing Gel .. Am I Allergic?

Keloids are very red, feel tight and do itch. You might want to try going without the gel to see if it improves the itching but it simply might be the way your skin is going to heal. My scar went hypertrophic and is still quite pink a one and half years post-op. That is just the way my skin is and I knew it going into this surgery. Instead of the gel, have you thought of using silicone sheets... there might be an ingredient in the gel that you are reacting to or like I said, it could be the keloid's natural behaviour. Gentle massage might also help.

Hi Danni3113

Thankyou for your reply.

I am definitely going to not use it for a few days to see if the symptoms subside, and might try Vitamin E Oil instead to keep the area lubricated to hopefully reduce the tight itchy feeling.

I considered the silicone sheets, but my tummy is so lumpy bumpy I think I would have a job getting it to lay nicely along the whole scar.

Also I did find the Gel made my fingers very dry, and almost sore after applying it, and learnt very quickly to wash it off and apply handcream.

Re: Silicone Healing Gel .. Am I Allergic?

The fact that the gel is making your fingers dry isn't a good thing. The idea behind the silicone is to create a moist environment where oxygen is maximized or at least that is the way I understand it. I would still recommend the gel sheets even if they are awkward. They sort of self-stick to the incision. I used them on my bikini scar and they stuck there by themselves with no help from any bandages. Good luck!

I was allergic to the gel. The skin around the incision got really red and raised.

Hi Buttercream ..

Did the red and raised skin disappear when you stopped using it?
