Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Apr 23-Apr 29,2012

Hi Tine! Welcome! I'm so glad you found us! You and I had our surgeries the same day for the same reason (large fibroid) and we're the same age. I turned 50 a few weeks before my surgery. Getting rid of that beast was a fantastic way to start my next 50.

Have you gone in for your post-op yet? Be sure to get a copy of your histology/pathology report if you're interested, for me its given a whole new appreciation of why recovery is as slow as it is, there was a lot going on in there.

As for hot flashes there are hormone creams you can put on topically, even over the counter, I don't know if that is ok for your concerns about DES -- for sure it's not estrogen. Progesterone (sic) cream my doctor prescribes helps me sleep better too. There are herbs and stuff other women I know have taken that help but I'm no expert on that. There is a doctor in our town that specializes in that kind of thing, Dr. Tori Hudson. You could find her site for resources.

Pearly: I'm a little envious of your, um, problem!

Checking in on everyone's progress. Everyone is doing great and controlling the "over do" gene we all seem to have! I can say the pain is more of an internal, achy, strain type of discomfort for me, much different now from the stabbing pain I was experiencing before. OTC pain relievers are good enough to take the nagging out of the equation. Good thing since the Ultram and I did not get along. I took my Son up the road last night to a class. My first time driving since 4/23. I am cooking meals as long as I am not on my feet longer than 10 min at a time. Taking colace, eating lightly and often and drinking juice and water constantly to keep the BMs maneagable and frequent. So far, no problems with the HRT. No flashes or mood swings. Husband is doing the lifting and helps with what I cannot do around the house. He still walks too fast for me to keep up when we go to my Son's baseball practice or grocery store. I have to remind him to slow down for me. That is the extent of my universe for the past few weeks. Looking forward to my new "ME" in progress. Hoping that the slight issue with stress incontinance is history now that the monster is gone and my bladder has plenty of room to stretch out!

Ok so I'm glad that apparently that is still possible but it was different and not in a good way and now I'm super achy sore had to take the prescription pain pill and haven't had one of those in three days.... Anyone have Anything like this or heard of it
questions like these can be posted in the post op forum but to ease your mind a little it is not at all uncommon. I had one less than one week post op.

I'm exactly 2 weeks post OP today....my doctor is concerned about my level of activity and wants me to rest more....I had a Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy which turned into an abdominal hysterectomy due to excessive bleeding (i was given 3 units of blood)...I rest as much as I can but compared to the daily pain I lived with prior to my surgery I almost feel like I have no pain...I can walk without dragging my left leg; to me it feels like a miracle!

So glad you are feeling the benefits of the surgery too. We have to resist the want to do more than we should. Rest like you were advised, so that the internal sutures heal and you get the best result after going through the pain and stress of a surgery to get where you are.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Apr 23-Apr 29,2012

HI girls-
On day 16.
I slept upstairs in our bed for the first time-did not sleep as well as the "guest room bed" that I have been using in our Living room downstairs. I plan to keep the bed downstairs for a few more weeks for naps and to lay down for a few minutes throughout the day. Stairs are still once a day.
Walking is still on the MINIMUM side till I get word form my doctor otherwise. I'd rather be a little overly cautious than do too much.
Hi PacificNW! I go for my 2 week checkup tomorrow and will ask for a copy of results as well as I have a list of other questions as well. I don't recall much of what the doctor told me the day after surgery and it's not my husbands strongest point to remember that stuff but I LOVE him dearly!
I am down 5 pounds (always a bonus), drinking a lot and eating mini-meals but still don't have much of an appetite. My body starts to fell lousy if I go too long with not eating, so mini meals it is! Also still taking Advil and stool softener twice a day.
Still can't fit into pants at all!! -hoping it goes down before I return to work at the end of the month.
BM still a bit painful (stabbing pains -LOW below belly button) and I know when my plumbing is going into gear-my lower back begins to hurt but once I have a BM, it all settles right down.)The sharing of info that we do!!
Any one doing fiber? (Metamucil kind of stuff??)
You are all great support and I appreciate all the info that we share with each other to help us move forward.
Will be talking to you all tomorrow. Hope your day is great!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Apr 23-Apr 29,2012

I almost slept thru the night last night - YEAH! I slept from 9pm - 4am and only woke up because there is a watch whose alarm went off...can't find it, think it may be buried in a couch cushion or something. Will have to have the family hunt for it.

I tried to cut my pain meds in half today - but it didn't work. I just still felt pain and a lot of pressure, so had to take the other. From what it sounds like, many of you just felt better and didn't need it anymore. I'm looking forward to that day.

This morning I took a walk outside first thing - it was a gorgeous morning. I'm being very diligent about making sure I walk everyday, and it is something my husband and I love to do together, so its fun. After the walk, I took a nap - amazing how tired I get after simple things.

Everyday I feel a tiny bit better - and I am happy at least the progress is always positive! That is something to be thankful for even though it feels painfully slow.

Walking with DH is something I really enjoy doing since I came home from the hospital. It gives him and I a chance to reconnect, get away from the kids for a few minutes, and improve both our health. I'm happy to see I am not the only sister on here enjoying those few precious moments every day.
