My Surgery and Recovery Progress-April 13, 2012
Hello, my name is Leigh. I could not find any other dates that included my surgery, so I am posting here.
I, like many of our sisters in waiting, was scared at the thought of having major surgery, even though I knew that it would be done robotically, would be laproscophic, and would be less recovery time. Still I was frightened to the point of not sleeping.
The day of surgery arrived, thankfully, I had my family and best friend there to support me. The hospital staff was very nice and took me to a nice, large, private room, to prep me for surgery. Dr. C was running early that day so I got to have my surgery earlier than expected. They had a little trouble finding veins for the IV even though I drank about a gallon of water the day before. Anyway, they had to give me two IVS, one in each arm, in case one came out-to prevent them from having to reset the robot, which would take an hour and a half! I spoke with my Dr for about 20 minutes as she described the procedure in detail and explained some aftercare instructions. Next I met the anesthesiologist. I don't remember much after that as they gave me the happy juice and wheeled me off to surgery. I did see the Robot and a huge crowd of people in the OR. Then they put a mask on me and asked me to breath and I was out like a light. I spent a few hours in recovery as the hospital was at full capacity.
Once back in the room, I felt a little pain in the abdomin, maybe a 6, so they gave me aome Morphine ever so often. I slept most of the time. They had leg compressors/massagers on my legs, so I had to ask a nurse or my father if they would take met to go pee in the middle of the night-no problem. They had taken the catheter out before I work up from surgery-bad thing was I was peeing all the time. I had drank some beef broth, ate some jello, and had an ice pop-thought this was the best meal of my life! That was until the nausea set in-no throwing up but definitely nausea, so I was given some phenergan and more morphine for pain-I slept a good while until they came in for vitals as they always do. To me, that's the most annoying part. That night I starting walking to the bathroom and back on my own, pulling myself out of bed, and walking around the nurses station. I wanted to go home! The served breakfast that morning and were able to substitute oatmeal for bacon and eggs as I get sick when I eat eggs plain. I went home around 10:00am and was prescribed Percocet, Ibuprofen 600, and a Combipatch. I took the Percocet for about 3 days and the rest was Ibuprofen 600 and the Combipatch, which contains estrogen and progesterone to keep endometriosis at bay!
I am now three weeks out from surgery and doing great. I was walking around and down to the mailbox about 1 week out. I was back much to regular life about 2 weeks out. I still feel a little weak at times, but life has resumed back to normal. I have five incisions on my body. The robot is definitely the way to go. If you are ever wondering if surgery is the best option, talk to your doctor-giant cysts and endometriosis were growing on my ovaries and my uterus was covered in endo, so I really didn't have much of an option, but some of you may. Be willing to try other options, but if you do have to have surgery-no worries it is a breeze IMO!
