Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 14-May 20,2012
TLH and right ovary removal on May 17, 2012.
The surgery went very well, despite my other health conditions causing some confusion pre-surgery. Once I was able to explain my other conditions, everyone was very good about things.
The hospital I chose does mostly outpatient procedures, a small facility so I got great post up care. Everyone was so good to me. The nurses and staff where very prompt when called and very pleasant. I got my own room, but that may be due to having an airborne anaphylaxic level food allergy to peppers (capsicum) or I just got lucky or they only have private rooms. If I ever need another surgery, I am so going there again if I can.
I also had a great surgeon, he had high marks on health grading sites. The nurses and other staff had lots of praise for him also. He called late last night to check on me. He even remembered to write a prescription for benadryl in case of allergy exposure. Most of my food allergies are low level, but do cause horrible abdominal discomfort and hives if I accidentally ingest them.
I don't remember very much regarding recovery and getting to my room. Around 9pm last night, I finally could hold a conversation and was up all night and slept on and off today. I had a catheter in until 9pm last night and IV and O2 on all night along with these leg compression things. So between having to pee all night and those things squeezing my legs on and off, I really couldn't have slept if I wanted. So I'm hoping I can sleep some more tonight. I am a side sleeper so I really need a true binder. We are using large ace bandages right now and it feels much better.
For me the most amazing part of my hospital stay was that they didn't screw up my food. I have five food allergies, and many of them are core ingredients to most prepared foods. I packed my own food and broth, since I have more problems with food allergies in hospitals than anywhere else. It usually takes most hospitals three to five days to get my food safe for me and somewhat nutritionally balanced. A nursing home I stayed at last year, basically could not feed me properly so I had to get well or get transferred, luckily I got well.
I have less overall pain than before the surgery except when my belly isn't binded. The adenomysosis was so bad that I couldn't even hug or kiss my boyfriend. It was really interfering with our relationship because if he accidentally grazed my belly or right side I'd scream in pain. We have a small kitchen and we bump each other often in there, today, he carefully approached me while I was at the kitchen counter and could gently hug me from behind with very little pain.
I could tell immediately after surgery that what has been bothering me in my right lower quadrant since 1987 was gone. I don't care if anything was wrong with it, I just know that the pain bugger is gone. I feel the same about the other removal too, though there is a lot more swelling going on in that area but I can tell that pain issue is gone there also.
I'm hoping my recovery goes well. I'm having some trouble passing gas and worried about the first BM but I'm doing everything I can to make that process not cause other problems.
