TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

I finally got the call from my doctors office. My TAH is scheduled for June 25th...seemes so far away...and it's going to be an out patient surgery...really? I thought I'd be in the hospital for at least 3 days. I don't see my doctor until the 18th for the pre op appt. Has anyone else had this done out patient?

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

I didn't have a TAH but a lavh but that just seems totally NUTS!!!!!! I've read gals on here that outpatient for divinci and thought that was crazy. Who's suppose to monitor you to make sure you're not spiking a fever or blood pressure is wack or excessive bleeding? Who's suppose to take care of you and your incision? I really question the sanity of this decision...and who's decision is it anyway? The doctor, the insurance, the hospital? I think I'd be making a call before your pre-op to find out why and if there is some reason they kick you out so quickly. I was in overnight but I would have been ok staying another night getting waited on and taken good care of.

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

Yea, that's nuts. Is it possible that it is an insurance thing?...I was approved for only one night for my SAH, and then each day, my Dr. requested an additional night for a total of three nights. I suggest you call your Dr.'s office and ask to speak to the billing person. Don't worry, there is no way you would go home the same day as a TAH. Laura

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

I stayed in the hospital one night for my LSH and they offered to keep me another one if I felt I needed to be there. I am really surprised they would do a TAH outpatient. I am hoping that you find out this is an error when you follow up. Take care and keep us posted!

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

I just had a TAH last week. You leaving the day of surgery does not seem correct. The anesthesia alone makes you feel wiped out. Call your doctor and speak to him directly. I was in hospital fior 3 days. By 3rd day I was ready to leave. I'm having an easy recovery so far.

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

Yeah I also agree that sounds a little crazy. Im scheduled for a TAH/SAH June the 8th haven't been for my pre-op visit yet but my doc already told me I would stay one night for sure and they would let me go home only if I was doing exceptionally well the next day but to prepare for 2 nights if not 3... I think I would def ask him about this cause it just doesn't seem right at all... Good Luck

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

My TAH has been approved by my insurance company for 23 hrs. My doctor is required to inform and qualify to the insurance company each day I am in the hospital. As I see it, it's a day to day thing, depending on how well I recover. She told me that the day of the surgery is Day 0 and that she wants me in the hospital 2 nights subsequent to the day of surgery. We'll see if the insurance company allows it. So for me as of right now, it's 23 hrs, which makes it pretty much ambulatory. Check with your doctor, it may be that they can only do it day-to-day because of the insurance company, but ultimately you would be in at least two days after surgery.

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

Thank you all so much. I hope that what you have said is the case. I am already worried about returning home and caring for myself (no one around) let alone coming home the day of the surgery. I am so glad I found this site. It has eased my fears so much already.

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

SBBarista - I had a DvH and stayed one night. I was told I would only go home if I was peeing on my own and showing no signs of complications. Outpatient for a TAH does not seem right. I agree that you should call your doctor's office or your insurance company to verify this.

p.s. I LOVE Starbucks!!!

Good luck to you.

Re: TAH as an OUT PATIENT surgery!!!

With out-patient surgery, it can mean a 23 hours or less observation that can include an overnight stay in the hospital. Same day surgery is generally that, have surgery and go home the same day. If your insurance covers the first night and additional hospital time is needed, your doctor can take care of the insurance issue. Try not to stress too much.

I stayed overnight when I had my TVH and a friend only stayed overnight with her TAH. Everyone is different.
