Should I have a mini hysterectomy?

I have extremely painful periods (feels like I'm in labor, can't sleep but in 15 minute intervals for 3-4 days, only light bleeding). One year ago I had filshie clip sterilization. Today my dr recommended narcotics (although they make me sick, dizzy), an ablation, or a mini hysterectomy (LSH I think? Keeping my ovaries and cervix and getting rid of those clips). He said the narcotics only mask the problem, the ablation may or may not work for pain, and the LSH will definitely work. I hate the thought of surgery but would really like for this pain to be gone for good. Any suggestions for me?

I have tried several NSAIDS and narcotics already. All of them either don't work or make me ill. I'm very sensitive to medication.

Re: Should I have a mini hysterectomy?

Can't he remove the clips and sterilize you some other way. It sound like your saying the clips are what is causing the pain.Your doc is right about the narcotics only masking the pain. It isn't a long term solution. I never had ablation so can't advise on that. Maybe do some research on it and see what you find.I'd only do a hysterectomy as a last resort. have you had a second opinion? It might be a good idea to see what another doctor has to offer before you undergo major surgery!

Re: Should I have a mini hysterectomy?

What exactly does your doctor think is causing your pain? If it is the Filshie Clips, rather than a hysterectomy a salpingectomy to remove the tubes might be the answer. It is possible that rather than the area clamped by the clips dying as it is suppose to when its blood supply is compromised, it is still be "squeezed" and thus causing your pain for a number of reasons.

If the problem is the actual uterus, then it could make sense to consider having it removed but I would suggest at least a second opinion first and consider less invasive treatment options. Even a partial or supracervical hysterectomy is a major surgery with a list of side effects to consider.

Your doctor is right about narcotics. Their goal is simply to trick your brain into thinking you don't hurt. There are other medications that can more treat the cause of pain depending on what it is. For instance, if the pain is from an issue with inflammation which could be occurring from irritation from the Filshie clips, then a prescription anti-inflammatory could be more successful.

I would suggest you keep a detailed symptom diary to help you and your medical team have a good picture of what is going on so you can determine the best treatment plan. There will be pros and cons for each so you will want to carefully weigh all of them for you. You may also want to talk to your GP to see what his/her perspective might be from a whole body viewpoint.

Re: Should I have a mini hysterectomy?

This dr was my second opinion. The first recommended a hysterectomy or narcotics. I have trouble with every NSAID I've tried. I was told the clips might be the cause of intensified pain, but it was pretty bad before I got them. And I was told that removing them wouldn't help because by now they've severed my tubes and scar tissue has grown around them. My mom says not to have surgery and tough it out (though she says she's never experienced menstrual cramps at all!). She went through menopause at 42... In which case I'd have about three years to wait if I do the same. Thanks for your input. I just want to be sure...

Re: Should I have a mini hysterectomy?

Both drs said for some people cramps intensify as they age. I also have a retroverted uterus which *might* be causing problems (it tilts toward my back instead of my belly).
