Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

You are going to have to trust your doctor on this one. Surgery is scary thing for everyone regardless of weight. A good doctor will discuss the pros and the cons of the surgery with you. If you are not certain get a second opinion before going through with it. Be honest with your doctor and be sure to tell him about all of your concerns.

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

I too, am a large sized woman and my surgery will be June 26. Yes I am scared to death of the "what if's". My doctor said there is "what if's" in any surgery large or small. I firmly believe we need to be positive....so if anyone out there in hysterland that is of the large plus size and has had their surgeries, with or without any problems, we could use some extra support. Anyone out there?

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

I am also a very large woman. I had a hysteroscopy / D&C last May and then my DvH (turned TAH) last July. I ended up having a 6" horizontal incision as well as my DvH due to the size of my uterus.

My hysteroscopy also showed precancerous cells, but fortunately the pathology after my hysterectomy showed no cancer.

I'm not sure if this is normal before all surgeries, but prior to my surgery I had an echocardiogram done as well as a sleep study where they discovered I have sleep apnea. I was put on a CPAP machine the week prior to my surgery.

My weight didn't really seem to effect my recovery at all. I started walking in the hospital and continued walking daily throughout my recovery. I was back to work 8 days after my surgery - albeit with help from my Mom for 8 weeks or so. (I am a home daycare provider.)

All of my incisions healed very well and my recovery was actually quite uneventful.

FWIW, all of the doctors involved in my surgeries were brand new to me.

I hope that your surgery and recovery go very well. Good luck!

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

I am also quite overweight and had my surgery almost a year ago. I had a TAH with a incision that ran from just above the pubic line to about an inch above my navel. I very careful during my recovery and followed the doctor's orders the best I could. I am delighted to say that I have had an easy recovery without any complications. Just remember to walk, walk, walk, and walk as soon as possible after surgery! Good luck to you!

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

All I can say is that I'm also a plus-sized woman. I had a complete hysterectomy for endometrial cancer just 6 days ago, and am feeling good now. Still taking some meds for post-surgical pain, but am up and about, walking

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

Whoops, I was cut off but want to continue...

My recovery is going really well after my surgery last week. I expect that you will be happy with your results too. I think the hardest part was all the waiting for me...I have such an imagination and it's natural to worry. Let me know how it goes, and best of luck to you!

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

Thank you all for posting! I too am a plus size girl - but am a lady in waiting...my date is June 13. I've began the worrying process now. I try not to think about the upcoming date, but trying to make preparations it's hard not to! I too worry about complications due to my size, and every procedure I've ever had seems complications head my way. I'm praying that I've paid my dues and this time all will go smoothly! My doc has scheduled me for an observation stay overnight after my surgery so that helps a little! I hope you ladies continue to heal and/or do well with your surgeries!!

Re: Very Over weight and worried about this operation

Dear Horselove,
I am quite obese and my complete hystectomy surgery was on 2/13/2012. I had no complications whatsoever. I had endometrial cancer, early stage with no radiation nor chemo needed. You will do fine.
If you had a diagnosis of cancer cells, I would highly recommend being referred to a Gyno/Oncologist to do that hysterectomy and not a regular Gynocologist. Doing so can mean another surgery by a Gyno/Oncologist; who is one trained in staging, grading cancer and in taking lymph node samples as well as perfoming pelvic washings. The staging, grading, lymph node sampling and pelvic washings must be done if you have cancer and most regular gynocologists are not trained to do this.

Being over weight will not harm you and you can have a very successful surgery. My pain level wasn't over a 2 and I really didn't feel like I had a hysterectomy!! All has been good during recovey. The DaVinci Robot surgery is a great way to do the surgery, through small holes on the abdomen.

Do walk and walk a lot, standing straight and tall, and you will recover much better.

My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Hugs,
Over the Moon
