Endometrial Ablation/possible Oopherectomy

Not sure if I posted in the right forum. I have been scheduled for pre-op on 06/26/2012 for endometrial ablation. I am also being tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes on 06/11/2012. My gyn told me that if she gets the test results back before my pre-op and if one or both of them is positive for a mutation, then I will be scheduled for a vaginally assisted laparoscopic oopherectomy. I am hoping the test turns out to be negative, but I am prepared for a change in plans if need be. I have decided to go into all of this with an open mind, and a positive attitude. I won't lie and say I am not scared, because yes I am a little, but whatever needs to be done to lower my risk of breast cancer is also good to. I saw my mother go through having breast cancer, and going through chemo and surgery and her getting very sick and depressed. I do not want that same fate. My grandmother, great grandmother, and many cousins and aunts have also had breast cancer and other cancers, so I am at a very high risk of ending up with breast cancer. That scares the heck out of me. I just hope sharing my story when all is done will help another that may be going through the same thing, or will go through the same thing.

Re: Endometrial Ablation/possible Oopherectomy

I'm so sorry you're in this situation. You said all of the women in your family have breast cancers and "other cancers." Did any of them have uterine cancer? I only ask because if you end up being put under to remove your ovaries any way I just wonder if removing the uterus instead of ablation might be the better choice. My great aunt died of uterine cancer.

I hope your blood tests come back with great news. If not, thankfully you can greatly reduce your cancer risk with surgery.

Good luck to you.

Re: Endometrial Ablation/possible Oopherectomy

Thank you Abagayle for replying to my post. In response to your question about uterine cancer; I am not sure if any of my relatives have had uterine cancer. I know one of my cousins had a brain tumor, my great grandfather had skin cancer, my grandfather on my mother's side had leukemia, and then some other cousins on my grandmother's side had breast cancer, but not sure about uterine cancer.

I just hope my BRAC tests are negative, but whatever happens, happens.

Re: Endometrial Ablation/possible Oopherectomy

I just had the ablation 2 days ago (5-30) and a diagnostic laparoscopy. It will be awhile before I know if it worked for me, keeping my fingers crossed. My cousin had the ablation done and had little to no pain, I wasn't so fortunate. Hope you do well with your procedure(s), and best of luck to you with your tests!

*hugs*

Re: Endometrial Ablation/possible Oopherectomy

Thank you Danielle. I hope your feeling better and healing well Mine is still a way off yet, so I am not nervous yet, but if I have to have the oopherectomy I am sure I will get nervous then.
