Will I have surgical menopause if I have been post-menopausal 12 years?

I am scheduled for a TLH with BSO June 18. Both ovaries will be removed. I went through menopause 12 years ago. Not ever taken HRT due to family history of breast cancer (my sister) and lymphoma (mother). I do have very dry skin but no other menopause symptoms. Will I undergo menopause AGAIN ? After surgery? Don't really want to risk HRT.. Anybody out there have experience with this or comments?

The ovaries secrete trace amounts of hormones even during menopause, so even after natural menopause you can experience symptoms of surgical menopause when the ovaries are removed and those trace amounts of hormones are gone.

Some ladies have found the symptoms enough that they chose to use HRT to manage them. Thus, you may want to talk to your surgeon about what your options may be. There are alternatives besides HRT for treating menopause symptoms when the goal is not necessarily to replace estrogen. For instance, women who cannot or choose not to use HRT can sometimes use various anti-depressants and even blood pressure medications to manage hot flashes.

Try not to worry but do check out your options so you will be prepared if you do find surgical menopause is an issue for you!
