June 4-anxious and nervous

I woke up this morning and out of no where my nerves hit me! I have never had a surgery, had my boys naturally. I am afraid of being put to sleep...any helpful hints to soothe the soul? I have the bowel prep tomorrow and am dreading that too. I know I will be so ready for it to be over by Monday, but right now time is dragging!!!

Re: June 4-anxious and nervous

This is really normal to feel like this. What I did was to try to stay busy, not allow my mind to take off on all the "what ifs" and just keep thinking of real pleasant things. I would imagine my dogs running in our pasture and use it to relax me. If I started to freak, I would calm myself by taking deep slow breaths and doing the imagery and would relax. I also had a stuffed bear that I would hold on to if I was really getting nervous. That seemed to help me

Re: June 4-anxious and nervous

I had back surgery 15 years ago-had never had surgery before and so had no idea what to expect. They put me to sleep before I knew it and the next moment I was in recovery. No problems encountered at all . I had my DVH on May 24th and went under just fine. When I came to in recovery the only difference was my mouth was a lot dryer-they gave me ice chips right away and then when I got to my room they gave me sips of water and Jello. The Jello helped with the dry mouth more than the water as it helped coat the roof of my mouth. So, if you experience the dry mouth, I recommend asking for Jello. My surgery went fine and no complications with anything! Good luck to you, hope everything is very smooth for you Believe 66! Take care.

Re: June 4-anxious and nervous

These feelings are very normal. Surgery is scary, but especially THIS surgery seems even more unnerving.

The doctors and nurses will take very good care of you. You will have a whole group of them just looking out for your. The pre-op nurses are wonderful, and will make you feel very comfortable and relaxed.

Keep yourself busy these next two days. Get food in the freezer your easy meals, super clean your house because you won't be doing that for a long time after your surgery, etc.

Treat yourself tonight ... maybe a dinner or ice cream.

Good luck with surgery. I am sure all will go well.

We will be waiting for you on the other side.

Re: June 4-anxious and nervous

It is normal to feel nervous. I have had surgeries in the past, but nothing like this one. About 4-5 days before my surgery I freaked out and got spooked. Thank God for HysterSisters! The more spooked I got the more I read on here and felt normal (?). I read cases that made me feel like mine would be a cakewalk compared to what my fellow sisters went through.

To help me the night before my surgery, my husband took me out to my favorite Mexican restaurant! Distraction helps tremendously with 'getting spooked' and before you know it, it is over and you will be helping others too. Good Luck!
