No hormones left....Prozac?

Why is it that doctors want to put you on Prozac for anxiety? I have no hormones left, why can't they understand this. Then they want to send you to another doc to talk about your childhood! Then you start to cry and they are sure you need Prozac....

Re: No hormones left....Prozac?

Are you experiencing anxiety or depression? If so, that would be the reason for the Prozac.

If you are not having anxiety but are having menopause issues for which you do not want to take estrogen (I read on another of your threads that you have chosen not to use ERT), then that is why the Prozac. Some anti-depressants such as Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, and Lexapro can be used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes.

If you do not understand why your doctor is prescribing Prozac, sit down and talk to him/her. If you and your doctor are still not on the same page, then you need to find a doctor you can work with.

Re: No hormones left....Prozac?

Thank you, Weiser, for your reply. I have anxiety, but no depression. I have a hard time riding in a car with anyone, hard time flying, etc. I didn't used to be nervous like this. I used to take estrogen, but went off a few years ago. I just started taking 10 mg. of Prozac, don't know if it's working yet.

This is the 2nd doctor I've gone to. He's my primary care dr. Had a woman dr. before, no better. If I could find a doctor who knew something about hormones, I would gladly take them. Most of them don't understand the importance of balanced hormones. It truly is a jungle we go thru.

Re: No hormones left....Prozac?

Why did you go off of them. Im on hrt but had to take celexa I couldnt find balance and had extreme anxiery and panick. I never had issues either but deciced if this gave me a normal feeling then so be it. They are used to help menapause and prozac is one of the better ones. I take celexa small dose and I was like you I would get social anxiety its better now. So now I only use hrt for hot flashes. I dont know why this happens to alot of us but I have friends who kept ovaries going through this. Hope this helps give it a couple of weeks to kick in and its like a cloud lifts off and menapause becomes easier to handle

Re: No hormones left....Prozac?

Hi, Vonnie 123, I went off hormones because I couldn't seem to balance them. Also, my doctor kept telling me I should go off. This was after all the stuff about the "dangers" of hormones. And I am close to 70 now and figured I didn't need them as much at my age, wrong!

I will give the Prozac more time to start working. I just get so tired of dealing with doctors who think you're crazy and don't realize how important hormones are when you are pretty much depleted.

It's good to know other women are having problems like me and we're not crazy!

Re: No hormones left....Prozac?

Yes, that seems to be the first thing they do when it's really out of balance hormones.
However, if we choose not to take the HRT route, it seems like a little help of some kind would be beneficial while our bodies are adjusting to this change.
If you don't want to do pharmacy methods, there's always naturals such as St Johns Wort, SAM-e, 5htp etc.
Also, there are some good sites on what kinds of foods raise your dopamine and serotonin levels. And exercise and getting outside in the sun also help with this.
One of the points to remember is since puberty our brains have been fed by our hormones. Now suddenly, they're not around any longer and the brain is missing them. Our brains go into shock just as much as our bodies after hysterectomy.
