excision post surgery pain relief

After re-examining me at my pre-op appointment, my gyn/onc said she would be removing my left inner labia and excising the lesion on my left outer labia. I forgot to ask her about pain relief. I've read several stories about vulva surgery causing excruciating pain that pain pills won't touch. Other than applying ice, is there anything I can do to lessen the pain? For anyone who has gone through this, did your doctor prescribe any topical pain reliever or is that a no no because it defeats the purpose of keeping the area dry to heal? Also, I've read walking is necessary to prevent blood clots and I've read walking is bad because it delays healing and can cause stitches to rip out. Which is it?

Re: excision post surgery pain relief

I don't have experience to help but wanted to offer support. Maybe if the Dr is unavailable by phone, the nurse could help, often they are the ones who give the instructions anyway. I'm wondering if a U shaped pillow would help keep pressure off when you sit? And should you be prepared with a squirt bottle to clean after going to the bathroom? I realize those are questions, not answers, but I've read about those things for other surgeries in the area. I know for clots even short activity and exercising the legs can be helpful. I hope someone with more experience can help more. I'm hoping for good pain control for you, and an easy recovery.

Re: excision post surgery pain relief

Thanks for your support. It's greatly appreciated. After reading several stories about excruciating pain, mutilation, and psychological trauma from vulva surgeries, I almost backed out. My gyn/onc assured me that I wouldn't be severely mutilated after surgery and post-op pain wouldn't be unbearable. My surgery was yesterday morning at 8:30. So far, I've only suffered mild pain. I'm glad the surgery is over. My gyn/onc said the pathology results should be back in 1-2 weeks. Honestly, I don't want to know my results. I'm ready to finish healing and get on with my life.
