Re: my family show no support
What a sweet thing for you to do! And you are SO right . . . It's time for ME now. I have been the only one taking care of "ME" for over 35 years and I'm still here, so I must be able to do at least a mediocre job . . . heeheehee!
I've been reading and trying to implement as many tips for "singles" as I can and I truly think that I will be able to manage just fine. The suggestion to put a kitchen chair next to the bed to help get up and down is one that I just ran across and I think it's a wonderful suggestion. It's probably going to be difficult to get in and out of bed by myself for a bit.
Chins up my Sisters! We can do this!!!

Re: my family show no support
My surgery is June 14th. I feel the same way that many of you do. My DH is being super supportive but my mother is acting like it's really no big deal and that I should be up and about in a couple of days. She has offered me no help, even though she rushed to my sisters side when she had foot surgery and stayed with her for 3 weeks (my sister lives 4 hours away, I only live 15 minutes from Mom). It makes my DH angry that she is acting that way and it really hurts my feelings also!!!

Well, after all, you don't walk on your belly, now do you? :to be read with the complete sarcastic intent with which it is written:
Honestly, it never ceases to amaze me how some people will react to certain things. And I believe it is so true that the people you love the most will also hurt you the most. Just remember to love YOURSELF, put one foot in front of the other and march on Sister!

Re: my family show no support
First of all let me say, good luck to all of you sisters. I wish y'all the best before, during and after surgery and a speedy recovery.
I already know what to expect, I had my gallbladder took out back in January. My DH wasn't very much help then, so I expect the same again. It must be a man thing! I don't expect much help this time either, for the simple fact. My DH had surgery on his broke foot back in March, and he still can't walk on ALL of his foot yet. Anyway just remember sisters, we CAN do this!
Big hugs to all.

Re: my family show no support
I, too, am having a bit of trouble getting some people in my family to take this seriously. My mom is semi-retired (she works on weekends), so I asked her if she could help me for a week following my hsyterectomy. Our conversation went something like this:
Me: "Hey Mom, would you be able to help me at home for the first week after my hysterectomy?"
Mom: "Why will you need help?"
Me: "My doctor told me that I would need help for the first week, preferably two, because I will be spending that time to recover, and heal from the trauma. If nothing else, I'll need help getting to the loo."
Mom: "That's ridiculous. I had a complete hysterectomy at age 35, and I was up and about after a day or two. You kids these days are too coddled."
Me: "Mom, I'm 47. Thanks, anyway."
It was quite depressing, and has been bothering since. My 14-year old daughter is determined that she'll be able to take care of me, bless her heart, but I thought it would be a good idea to have an adult with me, too.
Please know that I'm right there with ya, sister!

Re: my family show no support
I have had a similar experience in that my mother never worried about GA or any of her surgeries including her TAH. And I have a 19 year old son who doesn't get it at all. I just tell my mothers (79) that she was born when women had babies in the field and went back to work (lol). So she wouldn't understand. I just have to find humor where ever I can and try to keep as much of a smile as I can. Whenever I get done and feel alone, I also remember that there are people who have NO ONE in the world to help them, and some how they make it through. We are already strong, we have lived with whatever condition is causing us to need the surgery in the first place!

Re: my family show no support
I did have a Foley bag full of blood all evening. It has resolved today. I am having a rough day. I am really scared as to how this is happening and how I will by for 2 - 3 more weeks until surgery. I just stood in the kitchen and cooked dinner (catheter bag and all). I had to threaten my DH to come eat or I'd feed his to the dog. DH was on the computer as usual. I was just starting to feed his to the dog when he arrived. On the bright side my daughters are being more help then I thought possible. I am pooped mentally and physically! I am sorry you are all going thru similar things. I can feel our souls connect on here as women. We don't have to even see each other to connect. Mayve there is something magical about that. You are all awesome!!!
