2Jackies and Fasttalker.... I still have my ovaries. But, I thought I was on the up mend until today... Feeling kind of sluggish today and disappointed I'm not feeling as well as yesterday..... these hot flashes and icky feeling have really taken me down a notch. It does really seem to be an individual thing. Thanks for the support! Anyone else feeling this way 4 days post-op?

I keep trying to post but don't know what is going on with my computer. I did really well with the surgery but am having problems emptying my bladder so I had to go home with a catheter. I'm hurting right now but have felt wonderful so far! I hope others are doing as well. I'm thrilled that I did this and don't regret it a bit.

Hi ladies,
Today has been a day of naps, water, walks to the bathroom, food, and then repeat. It will be good to have that first bm.

Time for another nap...

I haven't had a BM either. Hopefully tomorrow. I've taken 3 stool softeners and drank tons of water. Nothing.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 11-Jun 17,2012

Yes, hot flashes are normal because your ovaries might not be working properly. The time of onset is different for a lot of ladies. Estrogen can be stored in fat so sometimes, it takes a while before the supply is depleted.

So why are you having hot flashes even though you kept your ovaries? Most of the time, the blood supply to them gets disrupted during a hysterectomy. This diagram explains how the blood supply to the uterus and ovaries can differ for various women. According to the info in the diagram, 56% of women have their ovaries get their blood supply from both the uterine and ovarian arteries. 40% of women have the blood supply come from the ovarian artery only and 4% get the blood supply to their ovary from the uterine artery only. During surgery, the uterine artery is cut so you can see how the blood supply gets disrupted. For the 4% that have only the uterine artery providing the blood supply, it would logically seem that if that blood supply gets cut off, then the ovary would stop functioning. And for the other 56%, it would take time for the ovary to get used to have only part of its blood supply. I would assume that the 40% would be the ones feeling the least of the effects. I am not a doctor but I think that my assumptions make sense when one views the diagram.

What to do about it? Having cold water to drink, using fans or applying cold cloths can help. If it really gets too bad, you can ask your doctor for temporary HRT to help you get through it but give it some time before asking your doctor. Sometimes, things get back to normal in just a few weeks.

Please don't be in a rush to get off your pain meds. There have been scientific studies that prove bodies heal better if they are pain free. You might talk to your doctor about using OTC meds in between your prescription meds as that seems to be very effective for a lot of ladies.

I hope all of this helps.

not in a rush to get off pain meds ... but would prefer no narcotic pain meds. those get me so nauseated. At the hospital, I would constantly need nausea meds to counter the narcotics. They just make my head spin and my stomach churn.

only on Anaprox now with Tylenol as needed now. Not sure just how well it's working yet since napping, water, bathroom and small kitchen trips is the extent of my days so far.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 11-Jun 17,2012

Hi everyone, I made it. It was rough! The surgery triggered a migraine so I had some vomiting afterwards and a massve headache. I has a LSH with bilateral oopherectomy and gall bladder removal. Surgery itself went well. I only had a few endometrial growths back from my surgery in 2009. Uterus had Adenomyosis (not a surprise, I knew I had it back in 09) I AM SORE! Sore sore sore and gassy and havent had a BMin 3 days and I am worried. I have had lots of fruit, veg juice, fiber one bar, colace 2Xs a day for the last 3 days and nothin.. getting worried. I have 5 little punctures and my bb is kinda bruised. I was sent home today with pain meds, estradiol 2 mg,colace and motrin. It does hurt to walk around, sit down, roll over etc. I imagine it is mostly the gas, or at least I hope it is and tomorrow will be better. Hope everyone is healing quickly!!
