Anemia? Anyone experience anemia since your hysterectomy?

Hello all,

Let me give you a little background...I had to have an emergency hysterectomy a year and a half ago, after giving birth to my twins, due to postpartum hemorrhaging. I still have my cervix and ovaries. I am in my late 30's.

I have never been anemic, my iron count has always been good. My last blood draw showed that I was slightly anemic. My doctor told me that since I was considered post menopausal, I should not be anemic. This has me worried.

I do have ulcerative colitis, which is in remission (inflammatory bowel disease), and I am not noticeably bleeding from the disease, in fact, I feel better than I ever have, being diagnosed 8 years ago. My dr. is testing me currently in case I am bleeding from my digestive tract. Tests come back next week.

So, my question is, have any of you ever tested with anemia, or borderline anemia since having your hysterectomy. If so, what was the cause or diagnosis.

My mind is racing with really bad thoughts of what it could be.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Anemia? Anyone experience anemia since your hysterectomy?

Sorry to hear what you have been through and continue to experience. Has your doctor put you on a course of Iron pills? I was anemic due to nonstop bleeding and then an emergency hysterectomy to stop it. My doctor had me on Iron before and after surgery. She did mention that it can take quite a while before your body recovers and you gain back all the Iron lost. Do you get enough in your diet? Try not to worry and whatever DON'T Google all the horror stories. Hope you can get sorted out soon.

Re: Anemia? Anyone experience anemia since your hysterectomy?

I have had to have two Iron Infusions. The first was not known exactly why I had such low iron, I was used to having heavy periods but my iron was so low my Dr. sent me to a Hematologist, and I was also very cold all the time and I craved ice. Two years later (April 2012) I had no entergy once again and was eating a bag of pebbled ice a day. I knew without even having my Dr. take blood that my iron count had dropped and I was bleeding to death every 28 days, so priror to my hysterectimy on May 30, the hematologist checked my blood and sure enough my fertitn was very low but my iron was even lower than two years ago; that is when we knew it was time for the hysterectimy. The iron infusions are truly amazing, the next morning I awoke to have pink lips and pink nails and I was no longer cold and have not had the need for constant chomping on ice. My husband would have to wear headphones at night. It takes about 3 days for your body to accept the iron and it takes about 6 hours for the iron infusion, usually done at a cancer treatment you lay there and for six hours are so thankful you are getting dark red iron (life) and not chemotherapy. I would not wait for your iron count to come up on its own, life is too short. Hope this helps.
