Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 18-Jun 24,2012

Had my surgery 6/19 & was dismissed from the hospital 6/20. Surgery was laparoscopic assisted vaginal hyst, so just 3 little incisions (1 stitch each) and then the internal incision. Had an enlarged uterus with several fibroids, but Dr was still able to perform the hysterectomy vaginally (thank goodness!). The pain hasn't been too bad from the surgery itself, but I had a terrible headache for 2 days. Called my Dr today & went in to see her. She prescribed some Tylenol w/Caffeine & I'm feeling better this evening. I've been a bit nauseous, but I can endure that much better than the headache. Looking forward to an uneventful recovery over the next few weeks. So glad I made the decision to have this surgery!

Take your pain meds as prescribed to stay on top of the pain. Your brain fog is often from the general anesthesia and takes a few days. Besides your brain could use a rest while your body heals. Everyone is different but I cut back on pain pills too soon and paid for it. Listen to your body and do what is best for you. It's just so good to be on the other side of the castle wall.

I totally agree with you, Jadefox. Mentally and emotionally I feel so much better than I did before. It's also nice that some of the things always present before are now gone. I will be honest... Brain fog and gas pains is for the **** birds.

Hello all
I am in the UK and I had my surgery on the 20th was booked for vaginal hysterectomy but things didn't quite work out. Complications during surgery occurred, an artery tore and lost 2 litres of blood so they converted to abdominal surgery. Total of 4 hours in surgery and just over 2 in recovery. Pain controlled for the first few hours with a pca of fentynol and then onto oral pain killers. Was able to get out of bed and have a walk around the ward about midnight to treat the 'cabin fever' as the nurses called the bit where i got tear full about the masses of tubes that were keeping me in bed. Had blood transfusion starting at 6am and managed to come home about 5pm on the 21st. Wind pains were the worse bit, feel stiff sore and bruised but not in pain as such more like i have done way too many sit ups managing on paracetamol and ibruprofen rather than the hospital prescribed pain relief. BM coming a little too fast (TMI) thanks to the lovely iron tablets I am on but all in all doing well.
Hope everyone else is feeling ok and recovering well x

Hi all, it is good to hear from everybody! I have been meaning to update but my head is in the clouds, and it is hard to concentrate. My pain has decreased tremendously. I stopped taking the morphine, and am only taking Advil which I find is adequate. I am still not doing much, I think when I came home from the hospital I was bending too much, it is hard to lose so much control in my life. I want to care for my family but am learning to let go. I had no idea how much we moved in a day before this lol. My family has been helping a lot, and I have been taking lots of naps. I had some regrets after surgery because I could not get my pain under control, but I am so over that. It is so exciting not to have to wake up at night in a puddle of blood. Anyways that is enough rambling for now. Hope you are all feeling good today. (((hugs)))

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 18-Jun 24,2012

Hi all, this is my first update. Surgery on Tuesday went well. Doc told DH "for a cute girl, she had a really ugly uterus." She also found a lemon-sized fibroid outside the uterus resting on my bladder so she got rid of that, too. Wednesday the catheter came out; the first time peeing was difficult but after that it wasn't a problem. But I needed help getting in and out of bed every time I wanted to use the bathroom.

Thursday morning there was a huge difference! I was able to get off clear liquids and the IV was taken out. I was told as soon as I passed gas I could go home. That took until 2:00 or so but it finally happened. DH has been wonderful, as I knew he would be. I'm gradually feeling a little better, but my incision is painful and getting up and down hurts quite a bit. I'm living on the 2nd floor which is where the bedroom and bathroom are - the stairs are too much just yet, but I've done some walking up and down the hall.

Hope everyone is recovering well!

Day 3 post op morning,

Woke up feeling the worst and the best at same time. Not sure how that is possible. drainage incision stopped seeping yesterday eve. My challenges have been queasy stomach, low fever spikes which seem to trigger something like hot flashes, sore butt from trying to sleep in recliner and not being able to sleep more than 4 hours per day.

Milestones are passing gas, BMs, hurts less when I cough, able to get up easier, walking so much I think I may end up wearing holes in carpet. Stopped taking Motrin yesterday morning but will take the script ibuprofen they gave me until it is gone. Figure that will help keep swelling down inside. Still have brain fog but getting more moments clarity. The chills & shakes from the anesthesia appear to be gone, yay!

I am eager to pass the first week milestone. In my mind it will be the turning point where the worst is over.

Oh, do I hear you on the shower! I had done a quick rinse in the hospital but just took my first real shower at home this morning. It felt great while i was showering but I quickly realized how draining it was. I'm back in bed resting but at least I'm fresh and clean!

I had my TAH on Wednesday June 20th, I took my first shower the next day. I had my husband help me since I still had my iv in and we managed to get water everywhere it was a mess. I took my second shower yesterday and made my husband get in the shower with me and do everything for me because I can't bend or reach up for too long. Put ur husbands to work ladies! Mine even gave my head and back a massage it was wonderful.
