Is this normal?

I had a LSH with my left ovary and Fallopian tube removed a week ago. I feel great with the exception of hot flashes that started on day 4. I'm only 34 and don't think I should be starting menopause. Is this just a normal side effect or could I actually be starting menopause?

Re: Is this normal?

Yes, it could be hot flashes because your ovaries might not be working properly. Most of the time, the blood supply to them gets disrupted during a hysterectomy. This diagram explains how the blood supply to the uterus and ovaries can differ for various women. According to the info in the diagram, 56% of women have their ovaries get their blood supply from both the uterine and ovarian arteries. 40% of women have the blood supply come from the ovarian artery only and 4% get the blood supply to their ovary from the uterine artery only. During surgery, the uterine artery is cut so you can see how the blood supply gets disrupted. For the 4% that have only the uterine artery providing the blood supply, it would logically seem that if that blood supply gets cut off, then the ovary would stop functioning. And for the other 56%, it would take time for the ovary to get used to have only part of its blood supply. I would assume that the 40% would be the ones feeling the least of the effects. I am not a doctor but I think that my assumptions make sense when one views the diagram. I hope this helps.

Re: Is this normal?

I had my LSH a little over a month ago and kept both ovaries. I have trouble with hot flashes when Im sleeping. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a pretty damp shirt. It happened a lot the first week or two and only happens occasionally now. I also have mood swings. I could cry at anything or even nothing (the first 10 days were the worst )and that too is almost gone. I do get angry quicker and cant tolerate as much squabbling from my kids also, but that too is improving. Its all signs that my ovaries are "waking up". Somedays Im my normal self other days Im not, but there are more normal days as I heal. I know how you feel Im only 35 and
not ready for menopause yet.

Hope this helps and it also helps if you give your family a little warning too
