Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 25-Jul 01,2012

Hello sisters,

I had a LAVH on Monday June 25, 2012. I'm 2 days post op. I did a bowel cleansing the night prior to surgery. They had me take 4 stool softeners and then mix a whole bottle of MiraLAX (238g) with 64 ounces of Gatorade and I was to sip on it every 15 minutes til it was all gone on June 24 starting at 1500. It was rough and I became raw from wiping so much. My surgery was scheduled for 1430 on Monday but they ran behind. They took out my uterus and cervix leaving my ovaries. It was a difficult surgery so it took them 3 1/2 hours instead of the anticipated 2 hours. I also had one good size fibroid in there and the uterus was bigger than they thought it would be. Prior to my surgery I had been bleeding profusely for 6 months straight with heavy clots during my normal cycle time. The doctor said I had a lot going on in there. Which doesn't surprise me from how I was feeling for the last 6 months of straight bleeding. They said they taped my eyes shut during surgery in order to prevent debris from getting in it. Is that normal? Something happened in between the time I left the operating room and got into recovery because my cornea in both eyes got scratched and I could not open my eyes. They had a doctor come in to check me and finally got ointment to put in it to relieve the pain. I left the recovery area for my room 3 1/2 hours later almost midnight I think. I could not see out of my eyes and it hurt when I opened them. My pain from the surgery was not as bad as I thought it would be. I also had the pain pump so I could click on it at any time. I was not bleeding any more but still wore a pad and the hospital gave me cotton disposable underwear to wear. The nurses were in and out of my room all night and all morning checking on me and taking vitals. I had water and ice chips to start off with. They wanted me to make sure I could keep it down without throwing up. Then they gave me apple juice to sip on slowly. Later on they had me order breakfast. It was a liquid diet. I ordered oatmeal, chicken noodle soup, cherry Italian ice, cherry juice and unsweetened tea. I wasn't very hungry but ate as much as I could so I could move on to the next stage for lunch which was solid food. They took my catheter off so I could go use the restroom. The first time and second time was assisted because the nurse had to teach me how to get up from the bed on my own and walk. It was scary at first but I did it. I just urinated. I've not had a BM since 6/24. I recall the nurse giving me stool softener while I was in the room as well. The last thing to go was my pain pump and then finally my IV a couple of hours before being discharged. During my stay I had a hard time swallowing. They told me it was from the tube that was in my throat during the extensive surgery. I had a hard time swallowing after surgery. My throat is still sore a little as of now Wednesday, June 27 at 1929 and I've been spitting out mucus a few times. It hurts to cough cuz of the incisions.

When I got home last night all I had to eat was soup and water to drink. I was full and didn't want anything else. My pain is not severe. It only hurts when I move and strain. The doctor gave me Ibuprofen 800 and percocet for pain. I've only taken the IB and don't feel like I need anything stronger til bed time. Last night I took lortab.

I ate a small salad for lunch and grilled some chicken and made some rice for early dinner. I've only had water to drink. I think I am healing real well and need to remind myself not to do anything strenuous.

Laying on my back is the best position. Laying on my side is ok but can ache a little. My incisions were glued shut so no stitches or staples. I had 3 incisions. One in my belly button, one above the vagina and one the the right of my navel. It does hurt when I move and stand but nothing major. I did get light headed from both sitting and standing up.

That is it so far. I hope everyone is recovering well.

DvH, A&P Repair with Bio-Mesh, TVT Sling, Perinioplasty, Labiaplasty on June 25, 2012

What was supposed to take 2.5 hours took 5 hours. Apparently I had a lot of scar tissue between my bladder and vaginal fascia. Dissecting the area was slow going.

My surgeon did such a good job that one of the nurses that assisted her has made an appointment with my doctor to have her issues cleaned up. Apparently she has made my lady flower a rather pretty lady flower. I can't wait for the swelling to go down so I can see for myself.

I remember being very nauseous in recovery but they took care of it quickly or knocked me back out because I don't remember much about recovery.

I couldn't pee, so had to come home with a foley catheter. I'll have it removed on Friday at the doctor's office to see if I can pee then. It's not the end of the world just really annoying. But no where near as painful as having my bladder fill up to 1250cc before the nurse could get the new catheter in. That was the only time I cried during the whole thing.

The pain is manageable with Percocet and 800 mg ibuprophen. The Gas X is helping I think but the gas is very uncomfortable. I'm taking stool softeners 3 times a day, and today took a dose of Miralax and was able to have an uneventful BM. That was a relief both physically and emotionally. I was afraid of that first BM.

Had my LAVH/BSO Tuesday. Took about 3 hours. They had me up walking the halls about 2 hours after I got in the room. Pain not near as bad as I imagined. I was and still am terribly thirsty and don't know why. I was released Wednesday afternoon after I ate solids and peed a bunch. Skin itched all over. Took a shower this morning and feel so much better. Now I await the Pathology report and am very nervous about that. I had complex hyperplasia with atypia. When I had the D&C 6 weeks ago, they did not find cancer, but my GYN told me yesterday my uterus was diseased. Too scared to ask what that meant. My ovaries. which could not be seen in the Ultra Sound, we're covered in cysts. My belly is swollen quite a bit, but I'm not noticing any gas. Throat is still sore, but much better than yesterday. Doctor told me I need to take two trips per day and not just to the mailbox. She told me I had to go inside the drugstoe and walk around while waiting on my prescription. She is worried about blood clots as I am overweight. Found the best way to sleep is in a recline position. Hurts to sleep on my side.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 25-Jul 01,2012

Had my complete hysterectomy Tues, 6/26 at 2 P.M. due to Level IV Endometriosis.
After getting settled in my room and met the evening nurse staff, she got me up and I walked four laps around the wing I was staying on. My nurse, Charlene, and the CNA, Kacie, kept saying how good I looked and couldn't believe how well I was getting along. I felt really good. Have had several surgeries related to ovarian cysts and endometriosis, and this by far is the best I have ever felt.
I didn't get much sleep Tuesday night in the hospital. Wednesday morning I had the catheter removed, thank goodness, and then was waiting to be discharged. My new nurse, bless her heart, wanted to wait until I had a nap after I took a Benadryl (something was making my skin crawl)! I had to let her know that we wanted to beat the rush hour traffic and I wanted to be home. After she caught my drift, she got the paperwork completed and I waited for a wheelchair to take me out. (I was so close to walking out by myself. That's how bad I wanted to be home!!!)

Arrived home about 3 P.M. and was met at the door by my furry children (four dogs). They were so excited to see their mommy! After crawling into my bed, I took a two hour nap and my hubby had dinner ready for me. It's amazing how your taste buds change from the day before surgery, when you're prepping and starving, everything sounds good to eat, and then when you finally get to eat, the food doesn't taste the same. I have yet to have an appetite and nothing tastes good to me (not complaining cause I hope to lose some weight).

I got a good seven hours of sleep last night which surprised me. The only issue I am having is the gas pain. Truly blessed to have my husband staying home to take care of me (we were expecting the worst) and to have been referred to a wonderful gyno/oncologist.
I am looking forward to living a painfree life after recovering from my hysterectomy. So far, so good!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 25-Jul 01,2012

I'm finally home after my TAH & BSO. Thought I'd be ready to go last night - they said it was my choice. I decided to stay as I didn't think the oral pain meds were working quite right - too much nausea. So they switched to ibuprophen and now I feel much better.

My surgery was to deal with a potentially malignant mass on my ovary. Well prelimary path said all clear but they did say not 100% sure until they completed all the pathology. Unfortunately they did find an endometrial stromal sarcoma - that appears to be stg 2. My gyn-onc said she would have to confer with her colleagues on what I have to do next. I am also conferring with my oncologist at MD ANDERSON who treated me for a different type of sarcoma many years ago. Hopefully he can perform another miracle this time. I'm going to check in with the cancer group now that I know for sure what I have.

I have four incisions on my abd. which hurt when I to stand or sit, I am otherwise okay.

I am getting gurgling gas pains now in my abd. and I think they are almost worse than the surgery.

I will check back in tomorrow with everyone.

I was told I could go home last night but hubby wanted me to stay so I did. I will be going home by 10 today.
Day 2 post op today and doing much better. One thing to add is that I have not ever taken anything stronger than Motrin for this. Not in the hospital and not at home. I would not even accept the scrips, only motrin.

My chief complaint is swelly belly and gas. Not knowing how much is too much walking I don't want to under or over do it.

All in all no real big complaints. Moving is still a little sore but not as bad as yesterday.

Hi all. I am home from my TAH on 6/26. Surgery went well but my Dr. said she found numerous fibroids with one being the size of a cantaloupe. Glad that is out of me. Was able to get up and move around the second day. Today I am just tired from all of the issues my hospital roommate was having throughout the night. Glad to be home and on the mend.
