What happens at a pre op?

I've seen several people mention pre op-what is this?
I have a meeting with consultant booked to discuss surgery options. Will there be a pre op in addition to this and what will be covered?

Re: What happens at a pre op?

My pre op with my ob was to go over the procedure, complications, and to ask any other questions I may of had. After we went over everyting I had to sign a release form

Re: What happens at a pre op?

I had an initial consultation with my surgeon. That basically led to the office booking a surgery date.

I had a pre-op with my doctor, which included paying the fee, signing consent forms, him going over the procedure, giving me pre-op and post-op instructions and prescribing pain meds for after the surgery.

I also had a pre-op with the hospital, where they had me pay, then asked various medical questions (do you have heart problems, diabetes, etc.). The hospital also took blood samples, a nose swab (for MRSA). In my case, they also did an EKG and a chest x-ray, but they don't always do that.

Re: What happens at a pre op?

I had a pre op with the hospital where I took chest xray, ekg and had blood work done. Also did pre registration ie, insurance info emergency contact, living will info. that sort of thing.
PRE OP with doctor was to go over last min questions and a chance for het to go over preop test results and sign any remaining forms, very quick appt. Nothing to worry about

Re: What happens at a pre op?

Thanks for all replies- I think my consultant might do that sort of thing at my next appointment. Some of it I had done very recently for hysteroscopy but thy go through it all again.
Thanks- no major surprises in there.

Re: What happens at a pre op?

Very useful thread. I was curious what the hospital pre op was for.

Re: What happens at a pre op?

I had my pre-op today. Blood pressure, surgery day's agenda, consent forms and last minute questions. Also listened to my lungs and heart, gave me bottle of antiseptic scrub for pre-surgery shower and then explored the hospital in advance to let my hubby know what to expect. He will be happy, they have quite a worldy cuisine in their cafeteria, an espresso stand, and free wifi!
