Hysterectomy and Prolapse Repairs 2 Surgeries or 1?
I have surgery friday the 29th. I ask my doctor what she planned to do with the prolapse and cystocele and she said I may not need a repair after she gets that big uterus and fibroids out. I told her I didn't want 2 surgeries. She said a lot of doctors do a wait and see approach and fix the rest (if needed) later. I keep reading that a lot of hyster sisters are having it all done at once. Any thoughts. I am just causing myself 2 surgeries instead of one?

Re: Hysterectomy and Prolapse Repairs 2 Surgeries or 1?
I am having my bladder sling put in during my hysterectomy. If you can, call a urologist tomorrow and see if you can get an appointment, explain to them your problems and that your surgery date is Friday and that you would really like to avoid 2 surgeries. Or at least maybe your gyn has a uro she works with that she can call in if she sees you need the repair after she is done with her work. Make a couple of phone calls tomorrow and see if either of these are an option. I am like you, I do not want any more surgeries than I have to. I have already seen the the uro, it is a simple procedure that only takes about 15 mins and only has about a 1 week down time, but I still profer 1 surgery. My uro also rfuses to use synthetic mesh which is a huge relief to me, he uses the pig material which our bodies don't refuse or attack like the synthetics.
I am only 32, this has definitly been a very tough decision to make. I am so sorry for the pain and suffering you have endured, but I would like you to know that YOUR experiences have helped me accept this is the right decision for me, as prolapse will not fix itself.
I am praying for you and hoping you get the relief you are seeking.

Thanks Young Zebra. I think the doctor does slings as well. I did call a Uro and he can't see me until August sometime. I can't wait that long. She (the doctor) mentioned fixing it if it looks like it needs done. I am glad that my posts have helped you. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. I will still call around tomorrow too. I'll at least know I tried.

Do the best you can for you. I foyur Dr knows how to do the repairs herself, please let her know your wishes to have it fixed now instead of later.
I am looking foward to hearing from you post-op and praying your recovery goes well, as other sisters have said on this sight, you only get 1 chance to recover so please allow yourself to heal properly so that " you can be the best you can be"

Thank you for caring. I will keep people posted. did you know that they almost stand you on your head to do surgery of this kind? Interesting. It doesn't bother me. It moves everything out of the way so they can see better.

I did not know that they stand you on your head, but it does make sense, and now if I wake up with a massive migraine I will know why, surely the pain management team can control that too right..LOL
Wishing you all the best LLL, the castle is just around the corner for you

Re: Hysterectomy and Prolapse Repairs 2 Surgeries or 1?
I'm having a hysterectomy, a cystocele repair, a rectocele repair, AND a bladder sling added all in the same day. In my case, it'll work like this....
My Gyno will do the hysterectomy (LAVH) and repairs starting at 11am, and then my Urologist takes over at 1pm to attach the bladder sling. One surgery, one stay in the castle.
The three of us discussed it, and decided that doing it all at once made the most sense. My uterus is oversized and dropping, so doing only the repairs would be just asking for another surgery down the line. I'm 47, done with having offspring, and premenopausal. Losing my uterus isn't unappealing to me, especially since one ovary will remain.
I agree that you should talk to a urologist asap. {{{hugs}}}

Re: Hysterectomy and Prolapse Repairs 2 Surgeries or 1?
I see that you're surgery is scheduled for the day after tomorrow ~ that's cutting it too close if you still have questions and reservations, IMO. It seems to me that you have important questions than can't be answered in two days, so I would take the time to find, and talk to, a urologist. I've seen some great stuff on this site, and the most important piece of advice that I've read by others much wiser than me is to make sure YOU are comfortable with what's going on, and to have ALL of your questions answered before the surgery. With that said, if it were me, I would probably reschedule. I understand how hard that would be, but this is your body, and your peace of mind we're talking about here.
