Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
Did pre op today and a few things that I didn't expect but thanks to everyone on this site, nothing really astounding anyway.
Definitely found out I'll be doing the bowel prep, which I had sort of hoped to avoid. The nurse told me though that bowel prep would be something I'm thankful for afterward, stating that the pain meds can cause constipation.
I also found out that I'll be spending at least one night in the hospital, as long as everything goes well. I had expected outpatient, but as I've learned on here through everyone, they do consider it semi sort of out patient if under/around 22 hours. I can't complain much there, at least will have help right there for any pain, etc.
Other than that, I filled out paperwork for the surgery, answered general health and medical questions, ekg was excellent, they took general vital statistics, gave me the pre bath instructions for night before and morning of surgery.
Hardest part of the day was giving blood....got poked several times with constant movement of needles before a vein would finally give up any blood. Told them sorry, I already gave at the office. LOL Now, will finally be at the castle a week from this Friday. Two months ago, seemed like the time would never come, and now seems like time is flying. Got the house cleaned, even organized closets. So can finally settle in and just do a lot of sewing between now and then.

Glad your preop went well and that your house in in order. I'm still about a month out and am already flipping out about my house not being in order.

Re: Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
Sounds like you're ready! For me the bowel prep was not that bad-I was actually grateful toward it as it curbed my appetite since I couldn't eat solids! I suggest lots and lots and lots of water, especially if your veins, like mine, want to hide. I wished I could go home the same day too, but once I was in recovery I was perfectly content to watch tv, nap, and be pampered-they could've kept me a week and I would have been ok! My surgery was exactly one month before yours and at 3 weeks out I am so happy I did it. In fact I wish I'd done it sooner. You'll do fine and feel great and we will always be here to support you. God bless and I am sending goos thoughts your way!

Re: Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
I really appreciate the support from everyone. I got pics for my husband today, he was having a difficult time wrapping his head around the idea of a vaginal cuff. I think things are a lot more clear now. LOL With all the housework finished, I am putting all my energy into quilts and trying not to focus on emotions too much. I do a little bit then feel like I haven't slept for two days, that makes me more emotional than anything right now. I feel like my life is being cut short by all this pain and tiredness. I'll definitely be glad to have the surgery over and be on the other side for healing.
I can't eat solids the day before surgery and have been worried how hungry I'd be. I'll definitely do tons of water since my veins gave the poor nurse so much grief just for a simple blood draw.
I honestly have one nagging fear as of now...I'm worried to death that at some point in the future I'll have vaginal prolapse. Other than that, I'm truly not sure if I should take a bag to the hospital with me and what I should pack. Nor do I have a clue what to do with the bag until I get into my room. I'd really rather my daughter and daughter in law went home when I go into recovery and they know I'm fine. Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
If I understand right, your clear liquid diet can actually include soda crackers. That helped me out quite a bit - gave me something to munch on. Also nice clear chicken broth was good. I was fairly nervous the day before, and was not real hungry.
I did not bring much to the hospital - they pretty much give you everything you need. I made sure I wore loose fitting comfy clothes, and wore those when I was sent home 3 days later. I brought a change of underclothes for the trip home. They provided gowns, etc. I brought some reading material but could not concentrate real well. I brought my cell phone - a nice life line to the outside.
I don't know what the hospital wants done with the bag during your surgery. My hospital wanted a family member to bring it up when I got to my room. Maybe they will let you put it in a locker?

Re: Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
I am 3 weeks out with a vaginal cuff and I too worry about prolapse but I am trying to take it extra easy to avoid anything like that and let myself heal. I know many women who have had the same surgery, most woth no problems so that is what I focus on. I had no choice regarding keeping my cervix and I am not upset about loosing it at all. It is what it is, I am happy to have my main problem resolved! The way I see it, if I can get through the pre-op jitters than I can get through anything, and I'm sure you will feel the same way post op. As far as your hospital stay goes, you are the boss. Don't worry about telling people you need quiet time to sleep-they will understand. I was told to bring nothing but the clothes I wear in and to wear those same clothes out so I wore baggy stuff and slippers. They had a paper bag that, I was told, would follow me from pre-op waiting, to OR, to recovery, and then to my room. I had my family hold on to my pillow pet, which they gave me in my room. It was great comfort to me when everyone left for the night and especially when I went home-it was a nice buffer between me and my seatbelt. God bless!

Re: Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
Awww ladies, thank you again, so very much. I woke up really weepy this morning and for the life of me just don't understand it. I know it sounds insane probably but I just feel really crowded right now, and like I'm losing so much control in my home and world. I am seeing our grown children more and more and more. LOL Don't get me wrong, I think I've got the most supportive family on the planet and appreciate them so much, yet at times I just want to crawl into a quiet corner to just try to absorb all these fleeting thoughts and feelings. I think I'll ask them all for one day next week for just my husband and myself. I'll leave everything at home for surgery, I'm sure any of them would be happy to bring me a bag to the hospital if I actually need it.

Re: Preop today and surgery a little over a week away
Im scheduled for the same day and have been feeling alot of the same things too!! I don't pre-op until July 2 so I'm still unsure of what all I will have to do, but it has been really helpful reading some of the things that other sisters are having to do to prepare. I was extremely emotional for the last couple of weeks and felt like a complete basket case, I had my cycle last week so that probably contributed alot. But now I am finding that I'm very anxious, I'm so ready for the day to get here, I have been reading more uplifting stories and have gotten some wonderful advice and support from others on the site. Good luck to you and soon enough we will be on the other side!!!
