6 months post op, multiple infections
Ok, so I'm 6 months post-op and I'm having multiple infections. Quick background, I'm 34 and in my ENTIRE LIFE I've only had one bladder infection and one yeast infection. Since surgery, I've had 2 abnormal pap smears (getting them every 3 months, vaginal pap smears as they removed my cervix in surgery, just had my latest pap 2 days ago and waiting results), I'm on my THIRD bladder infection and this time, I have a yeast infection as well! Now, I have NO signs of a yeast infection (no itching, burning or discharge). I'm waiting on a script for diflucan, a week of macrobid and then 3 months of low-dose abx for the bladder infection. Anyone else having issues with this? Yes, I do have a sling that was placed during my surgery. I'm ready for a second opinion because my MD isn't concerned with all these infections at all. I'm getting so frustrated and my poor husband is so upset!

Re: 6 months post op, multiple infections
Survivor1977,
I am so sorry for all you are going through. I am happy to see you are going to get a second opinion. There most definitely is a problem if you are recurring infections. In the meantime, may I suggest you try to help cut down on the bladder infections by taking some probiotics, drinking a minimum of 11 glasses of water each day and cut out sugar and carbonated drinks. Also be sure to urinate after you are intimate with your husband and avoid tight fitting pants. I found those things helped keep my infections to a minimum.
Let us know how you are doing.

Thanks for the support, Molly! Scary thing is, the only thing I'm NOT doing that you've listed is taking probiotics! I'm an RN so I know already about most of those. I drink 80oz of water, MAYBE have 1 coke a day when I'm at work (Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights), have sugar one day a week, always urinate after intimacy and tight pants make me uncomfortable! *sigh* Oh well, I'm currently searching for a new MD.

Re: 6 months post op, multiple infections
Hi,
I am having similar problems. Since 2 weeks post op I started getting Uti's and Yeast infections. I am almost 5 months post hysterectomy, which was a vaginal one and I'm at the end of my tether
I have had recurring bladder infections which were treated with antibiotics but as soon as they were finished the infection was back. I have found that probiotics keep the infections at a minimum. Also I have been treated with every sort of antifungal cream, pessaries, meds to no avail.
It's very frustrating and I haven't been intimate in months.
My gynae doc has arranged for an ultrasound but that's not for 4 more weeks. To be honest he wasn't that interested in my problems which I found very hard to take considering he is paid handsomely to be a consultant
I have read that a change in hormones can cause Uti's and yeast infections so I'm going to ask my Dr the next time I see him.
Sorry I don't have much positive to say.
All the best,
Extremely frustrated

Re: 6 months post op, multiple infections
Caroller,
Did you keep your ovaries? There is definitely a connection between bladder pain and UTI's and lack of estrogen.

Re: 6 months post op, multiple infections
Hi Molly50
It was a total vaginal hysterectomy due to chronically painful periods and heavy bleeding, I did keep my ovaries though. I have been told that your ovaries can be 'hurt' during the operation but they settle down eventually. Not sure how true that is!
Thanks for your reply. Will definitely talk to the gynae about this
