weight

So what's up with leaving the hospital weighing more then when I went in? I haven't eaten much since surgery 4 days ago and had numerous fibroids taken out (one being the size of a cantaloupe.) Any ideas on this?

Re: weight

A lot of it's probably IV fluids. I left the hospital really well hydrated, about four pounds worth. It took a couple of days for me to pee all the extra fluids out of my body. I'd recommend against getting on the scale for the next few days.

Re: weight

For some ladies, the IV fluids take a while to find their way out of the body, as well as swelling from the surgery can be similar to retained fluid as far as weight showing up on the scale. Both are temporary, and not an indication of permanent weight change.

Re: weight

dms42- I "2nd" what our 2 sisters said before me. I had an IV running for the 3 days I was in the hospital & it was only stopped about 6hrs before I came home. I "gained" 12.6 lbs from the day before surgery. It was off within 4-5 days after I was home. I did weigh each day, but only to make sure it was going back down. It was quite a surprise, but I felt it too- the day after surgery I as telling my nurse that my feet felt really swollen (they didnt "buy it" since I am "fluffy"...they dont know that I have cute "skinny" feet typically )
Watch you sodium intake for a few days & as strange as it sounds -drink lots of water (as long as no reason why you shouldnt in your medical history) because it will help "flush out" the fluid weight.
Dont get discouraged, it'll go away- probably with a little bit extra (although it has sounded like even the huge fibroids dont end up weighing as much as one would think- be sure to ask about it at your post-op appt.

Re: weight

I was disappointed by the weight issue also. I'm about 50 or 60 lbs overweight but still was hoping there would be a decrease. MY doctor did warn me that my stomach wouldn't be any smaller however I guess It was wishful thinking. Since the surgery I have gone down about 10 lbs however. This is at the point where I was a few months back before I found out about the fibroids and had tried a juice fast to cleanse my system. I'm back to that point now so maybe I can keep it up!

PS I highly recommend juicing since it is so healthy, not fasting but adding juice to your diet.

Re: weight

Hi...I too came home weighing about 5 or 6 pounds more than I did at my admission to the hospital. I hopped on the scale thinking that I had be weigh less if my uterus and cervix was removed along with the fibroids. Well...I was wrong.I asked my husband (who has been an RN for 20 years) what he thought of it and he said that we are well hydrated because of the IV fluids we are provided with. Inflammation as a result of traum could also contribute because it causes fluid retention...and then the wonderful anesthesia....Of course if you are swelling significantly...and it does not get better and you are experiencing other symptoms like headaches, nausea...etc...please call the doctor. Hope you see a change soon. Same for me!! lol!

Re: weight

Don't panic, you will pee it out. We are all different and how we each retain fluids just depends on our our biology. My ankles were even swollen and I couldn't get my rings on...was discouraged. It does get better. Best to drink keep drinking water and keep up peeing!!!
