Getting off HRT

I had my (full) hysterectomy over 5 years ago and have been on HRT since the beginning. It seems that in the last few years I don't like the way I "feel" any longer taking estrogen, testosterone and now they've put me on thyroid meds. Ick. I'm sick of the side effects & I'm thinking of getting off the HRT for sure. I'm certain my doc won't let me off the tyroid, but he will have to "adjust" the dosage because I'm experiencing just about ALL of the side effects! Has anyone else had any success with not taking HRT? I'm 45 and at some point I need to allow my body to experience menapause! Perhaps there are vitamins and natural products that would help in this process? Would love to discuss....

Re: Getting off HRT

BMAX, I Feel your frustration! Let me know how you do if you decide to get off.

There are some older threads on here with positive inputs of women getting off HRT. Women who had their hysts quite some time ago, as opposed to just starting out on the journey.

Unfortunately, it seems the ones who feel really well with no hrt fade away from the site.

Re: Getting off HRT

Thanks for the reply - I guess I could see why they would leave the discussion. Would be nice to have a "follow up" discussion after they've been off for a while!! :-)

Re: Getting off HRT

I was on it for 7 years and have been off for 3 years now. I am a bit older than you so that might make it a little easier. I weaned off very slowly for years and then just dropped the lowest dose patch. I sometimes have a flush but nothing big like I used to.
You might try vitamin E , vitamin B6, B12, Calcium, vitamin D, fish oil, primrose oil and a multivitamin. Black Cohosh may help some or the product Estroven just to help you sleep, relax or take the edge off.

I find caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, sugar to be the worst thing for hot flashes. I stay away from these most of the time. I use decaf tea or coffee. Eat fruits, veggies, fish, chicken, turkey and all whole grain flour products,no junk food or fast food stuff, low fat foods. I find exercising helps a lot too, especially for sleep.

Good luck and hope you feel better.

Re: Getting off HRT

BMAX, here are the older threads that have some good insight (I don't know how to paste them..I had copied them into my personal jouirnal I keep so I'd never lose them)

"Is anyone ok without HRT?? "

"How much have you changed as a woman without ovaries and no hrt?"

"Saying "hi" 6 years later, no HRT, feeling great!"
