incision reopened by doc

Last sunday night my abdominal incision opened up and was draining ALOT so monday I went to see the doctor. He admitted me to the hospital and had to reopen the incision. I was in the hospital for 2 days and today I was sent home with an open wound 6x2x2.8 cm. Home Health has to come in daily to change the dressing and it is VERY sore. Anyone have experience with something like this. How long did it take for the wound to close up and heal. I just want to be back to normal. I'm 2 weeks into recovery already and want my summer to be somewhat enjoyable before I have to go to work (I'm a teacher, so back to work in sept). I'm having a very hard time staying positive and keeping my spirits up since this setback. I cry all the time, I'm sad all the time, I don't even want to get out of bed.

I don't have any answers for you, but please know I'll say a prayer for you. No wonder you feel so sad. Hang in there. Do what you need to do to heal.

(((Hugs)))

I don't have any experience with this but I want to let you know that you will be in my thougths & prayers that you have a smooth & easy recovery from here on out.

Perhaps, now that your incision is drained and taken care of it will heal up nicely and may not set you back too much.

Sorry you are feeling so sad & down. As hard as it may be, try to do some things you enjoy, like crafts, or read favorite books, favorite TV shows, etc. Read positive & inspirational quotes...anything that can lift your spirits.

Re: incision reopened by doc

Oh Sister...can I relate to you!!! 6 years ago (my first gyno procedure) resulted in an infected insicion, a 3 day hospital stay, MEGA doses of anti-biotics and wound care (packing). My doc showed my hubby how to care for the wound, so my wonderful sweet man who can't even watch the surgery channel on TV was packing my wound. It was about 4 inches long and 2 inches deep. We first started packing it twice daily and irrigating it with peroxide and then dropped to once daily after the first week. A dear friend of ours is an infection specialist nurse so she came and reassured us that we were doing things right - however, she suggested to use saline to clean it with instead of peroxide (as peroxide is more harsh). I think it was about 4 weeks until it had healed enough that we didn't have to pack it anymore and then took a couple more weeks till it was sealed (or as hubby said, waterproof)!
I HATE that you are having to go thru this, I still tell the stories of how I felt like Mel Gibson in Braveheart at the end when they were slicing him open to kill him...sometimes I'd cry when we'd change the dressing, sometimes I'd chant "Freedom"....and sometimes I'd just pray! Hang in there and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel, I'll pray for you! It can get very depressing but try to keep your chin up!
I'm here to chat anytime you need to!
