Still constipated 18 months post-op

It has been about a year and a half and I am still constipated.
So much so that I have my own gastroenterologist.
He has put me on a regimen of Miralax, fiber, and stool softeners.
I have to have this every day.
IF I don't, I can't go.
Is there anything I can do about it?

Re: How long before bowels return to normal?

I've been using probiotics since my surgery, as needed. I'm using the type that has to be refrigerated, millions of enzymes or whatever they're called. They really work. I also use some chewable wafers (refrigerated) when I have indegestion. They both really work.

You can get them from the healthfood store or order them online from a reputable website. I order online. Not sure if I'm allowed to mention a specific site.

Re: Still constipated 18 months post-op

I am on a regimen of fiber supplements, stool softeners, etc. and will probably always need them. Now I do know why so my question is what is the gi doc saying? What is causing this? There is usually a reason for this problem. Mine is Crohn's and IBS and slow motility. Make sure you drink lots of water and stay hydrated. I also use probiotics but they really haven't done a thing for constipation. They do help me avoid thrush and yeast infections. And my gi recommends them highly.

Re: Still constipated 18 months post-op

I have had issues with constipation off and on since even before my tah/bso. For me, too much fiber has the opposite effect. It constipates me. For me, taking enough magnesium and accupuncture, and staying away from fiber helps to keep me moving.

I have found that a bowl of natural popcorn will help so much in shifting things and believe me I have tried everything. I do not recommend popcorn covered in butter but those natural prepopped bags. I had tried prunes, magnesium, you name it but this works great plus it tastes pretty good too

For me, popcorn has always been constipating. Glad it is working for you.
