Is it normal for the Gyno-Onco not to look at ultrasound

Hi everyone,
Just a quick update. I was referred by my regular gynecologist to a gyno-oncologist for a cyst that was simple in April 2012. Last week, another ultrasound had found the cyst was now complex. During that time frame from April, it grew from 3.5 cm to 5.5cm, now has some debris on the bottom area of the cyst, and has the beginning of a septation in it. The gyno-oncologist briefly examined me. I feel very comfortable with him, excellent doctor and has a great reputation and spent as much time with me as I needed.

Here's my concern, he felt based on the report he was reading from my gynecologist's office that did the ultrasound, that this sounded benign to him. He suggested either wait 8 weeks and check again or have surgery and remove it. He believes there's a 95% it's benign (again, based on the report and not him taking a look at the ultrasound himself).

Is this normal ? I would have thought he would have received the actual ultrasound so he could judge for himself, rather than just a report.

Tevs- I know and understand the frustration of feeling like maybe the dr might have missed something. If it will ease your fears you could always get referred to a 2nd gyn-onc!

Really it may be that there was a report by a radiologist, who could be more experienced at reading them than the GYN onc-----could that be the case? I know not all Drs are expert at reading scans. But I don't know if that's the case here. Another opinion might help, or ask why this one opted not to look at the scan? I will say one GYN looked at a scan I had, another just looked at a scan report, so it may vary as to what they do.

My GYN ONC didn't have the actual pictures, only the report. In this day and age I couldn't believe that they had no way of electronically sending them! I asked her and she said that she didn't need to see them since it was all in the report but the only way would have been for my GYN to have sent them with me.

Thanks everyone for your replies. That makes me feel much better that this does not seem so uncommon. This has really kicked up my GAD. Surgery is scheduled for August 10. Seems so far away, especially when cancer worries are constantly on my mind. Will post an update when I know more. Thank you for the responses.

The actual report gives a lot of information, so this is not uncommon.
I can see your point, though.
If you had the actual picture to give your doctor, this may have helped.
