what are the list of complications for a hyst?

Hi. I am the one with the watermellonsized fibroid yet no real problems (yes, except peeing frequently) I'm 51, still have my regular light periods. My insurance is running out next month and I could get this very large watermelon taken out. I am hearing on this site to weigh quality of current life with the fibroid against possible regret about the surgery and I don't understand what the regrets would be..please tell me. Does it hasten menopause (even if you leave ovaries and cervex..at 51?), does it change sexuality?,
On the positive side, will this belly of mine that has always hung out shrink in appearance?
Please inform as I have a time sensitive decision to make. Thanks so much!

Re: what are the list of complications for a hyst?

How quickly can your doctor do the surgery? Personally I would want to be sure to have access to the dr. for a while after surgery of this magnitude, just in case. I also would struggle with feeling time-pressure for a big decision.

There are programs that may help you if you decide that you want to do this later, if you qualify. I am uninsured because I'm on disability and they make you wait 2 years before you get Medicare. I qualify for a program at my hospital that provides any medically necessary care needed at no cost to me. Different hospitals have different programs but if you have a low income you should look into it.

As far as what complications exist, I think they are the standard ones mostly: infection, problems with anesthesia, bleeding excessively, some accidental injury during surgery like a bowel perforation, pain, etc. I don't know if the size of your fibroid would increase any risks or change them.
