why i had my hysterectomy.....

I had a complete hysto Mon morning (july 9th). Went through my previous bikini cut from my twins (actually 1 was natural & 1 emergency c-section) 12years ago. I am really glad she didn't have to do the vertical cut...she wasn't sure until time for surgery because of size of uterus and cyst. I actually had this as a preventative against ovarian cancer. I lost my Mom 16years ago to this horrible disease . She was in her 40's and said I would make the final decision when I am in my my 40's....well, here I am, about to be 42. A swollen belly (one if the same symptoms my Mom had) and a check up later....everything ok, just common cyst....but I was a nervous wreck....it was time. Found out after surgery my uterus was 4x's it's normal size.....no wonder! I stayed in hospital until Wed night (2 1/2 days) after. Things are good so far, just get very uncomfortable sometimes. I am taking hormone pills everyday, so far so good. The site is filled with wonderful information, and I'm so glad I found it, along with along with Ll of the other women going through this or thinking about it. Thanks again

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

I had mine on Tuesday morning, but had it laprascoply. I'm only 31, but had endometriosis and was tired of always being in pain. My recovery hasn't been too bad, but starting to get cabin fever. Hoping that will get better when my boys come home tomorrow.

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

I had my surgery because of possible uterine cancer due to heavy bleeding. I was "fortunate" as the doctor said at my post-op appointment. I had tumors on my ovaries that were "borderline." He said if I didn't have surgery for the bleeding, I could have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer later and it would be a late-stage diagnosis. Many women are having a hysterectomy for prophylactic reasons -- female family member with ovarian cancer. It lessens the chances of getting ovarian cancer, but there are still cells in your body. Be sure to continue your gyn follow-up exams. Anyone with ovarian cancer (and other cancers) should be sure to make your physicians aware, as well as the physicians of your daughters.

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

I'm 36, and had my tvh/bso on 7/10. I have a strong family history of abnormal paps, my mom and aunt actually had cervical cancer after pathology came back. Gramma had one back in the day and aunt so n so hemmiraged back in the day too.

During the testing to diagnose my pcos in feb/march found my endometrium to be thick, but thought due to no real period in nearly a year. Ended up having biopsy and d&c to find atypical cells so out it came before anything turned cancerous.

I chose to also remove ovaries, hoping to find some relief to my pcos symptoms. I figured they weren't managing the hormones right anyhow.

I actually had hot flashes more before my surgery then since (so far).

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

I'm lucky that ovarian and cervical cancer do not run in my family, but due to the Endometriosis they had to take my ovaries, but she went ahead and took my cervix too to help prevent possible cancer cells in the future. So I have nothing left. My left incension is the most sore and I finally had a BM tonight. Hope you recoveries are going ok. So glad to have other women to talk to about this.

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

Welcome to the site. I am so sorry you lost your mother at such a young age. Recovery will be tough, but having peace of mind that your children will not lose their mother to cancer like you did will be what reminds you how good this surgery was for you My doctor took my uterus and cervix. My best friend lost his mom one year ago to cervical cancer, so knowing that can't happen to me is comforting. My grandmother had a complete hysterctomy due to ovarian cancer, and my aunt had one due to endometriosis.

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

I had adenomyosis and my uterus was attached to my abdominal wall, they found 2 large masses on the sono and said that growth that significant in 8 months wasn't good so I had my TLH when I was 28 this last May. It was a sudden decision, but completely necessary. I don't have to worry now and my life is just getting back to what it was pre-pain era. Best of luck to you and I completely understand on the ovaries- had cysts removed at 18, and chemo round. I still have them but they are scarred and non functional.

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

My problem started in Oct just felt pain and pressure on my left side. My periods were heavy. My RNP diagnosed it 2 x as a UTI but I as a nurse new better. Got appointment with the Gyn only took 3 weeks for that. Once Iwas seen there was a large fibroid of about 7cm. Put me on BC. Had much better periods and the pressure was still there in March. I work as a nurse and lifted a large patient one weekend and it did me in. I was back in the office less than 2 week after my last one. I did not really want surgery as it is a financial loss as I have to be off 6 weeks and I do not get my weekend or shift diff when I am on vacation. In the mean time I had lost 25 pounds hoping that would help the fibroid. It did not but did make me feel better. June 12 I had my surgery and had a DVH best thing I did. It did hurt I had great nurses and gave my Toradol. I am not one to take the pain pills I only took them at night. I still have some drainage and a little pink blood every now ad then. I go days where I have no pain or pressure and then a few days where I have it. I return to work in a week. Can't wait! Would I do it again? Absolutely! Plus I have a wonderful doc!

Re: why i had my hysterectomy.....

Luckily for me I am a stay at home mom, so no worries about taking off work. But my boys (5 and 8) come home today and they are use to Mommy doing everything for them. They are gonna have some adjustment and hoping my husband is up for the challenge of taking on my duties for a couple of weeks. Hope everyone is having a good day.
