Nebothian Cysts and cancer

I wasn't going to ask about this. I was just going to have a wait and see approach and not worry about "what ifs" and not imagine worst case scenarios. But my head just won't leave me alone, so I have to ask.

Along with my HSIL reading on my pap smear, I have been told I have nebothian follicles aka nebothian cysts. These cysts are normally nothing to worry about. They occur routinely in women who've had children or are in menopause. I have never had children and am not yet menopausal (maybe just starting peri menopause, but that would only be in the last 6 - 12 months).

Has anyone had these cysts and they turn out to be cancer? Has anyone had them and they don't turn out to be cancer? There is so little information on the web about this. One site says that in rare cases, nebothian cysts can indicate a "rare musous producing cancer" and that's it. I look up "rare mucous producing cancer" and find one reference to rare cancers being clear cell and sarcoma. I look up those things and there's practically nothing.

I'm getting super frustrated at the lack of information. I don't know if I'm searching wrong or if the info just isn't there. If anyone can enlighten me in any way, I'd really appreciate it.

When the gyno did my colposcopy and told me about the cysts, I asked what the chances were of it being cancer and he said 1 - 2%, but he didn't say anything nice and reassuring like "but i don't think you're in that 1 - 2%"

I've still got 2 weeks to wait until my LLETZ procedure, which seems like an eternity, tho I know it will be here all too soon. And then there'll be more waiting for pathology results. Why does this have to be so agonisingly slow!!!???

I'm an alarmist and pessimist by nature, so this is soooo torturous, tho probably no worse for me than anyone else.

Re: Nebothian Cysts and cancer

Yes i had/have them, as per my mri at least 11the of them on my cervix, i asked my doctor about them prior to surgery and she said they r nothing to eat worry about and r found on the cervix because it is a mucus area. I did research on the internet as well and never saw where it was linked to cancer....i m off to google now, u haveto alarmist me second guessing and i m the same as u alarmist ans pessimist.

Re: Nebothian Cysts and cancer

kmb ... i do hope you're right. i googled everything i could think of and found next to nothing. maybe that is a good sign. maybe the person talking about the mucous producing cancer doesn't know what they're talking about.

i guess the hsil result on my pap smear, plus the fact that the gyno didn't even taking a biopsy during the colposcopy because the abnormal area was so large should be enough to worry about, without searching for obscure references on other things.

i'm so tired of thinking about all this. i wish i could just shut my brain off for a while. it doesn't seem to matter what i'm doing, it's always there.

Re: Nebothian Cysts and cancer

I also believe if they were serious my doctor would have done her best to remove my cervix during my surgery. Relax and rest. And if that doesnt help have some chocolate

Re: Nebothian Cysts and cancer

Dear KayfromOz,

I was 56 still having periods when I went for my annual. I had had a Nabothian cyst on my cervix, but it had grown from the previous year. Pap was normal. My dr wanted the cyst removed. Went to a surgeon and he had never seen a cyst like mine. He said it had developed and had it's own blood supply. He sent me for an ultrasound and it was normal except for a small calcification. I ended up seeing the surgeons partner on my follow up and she had never seen a cyst like mine. I did lots of internet research, but didn't learn all that much. Surgery went well and I went home a few hours later. At the follow up a week later, I got the news of endometrial cancer. The surgeon had decided to take several uterine samples which showed cancer. Funny thing was the cyst was benign. The cancer was stage 1a, grade 1-2 and the surgery was my only treatment. Recovery went well. Let me know if you have any questions.

Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: Nebothian Cysts and cancer

hi healthy and fun

wow, sounds like the cyst actaully was a good thing, hey? if your dr hadn't wanted to removed, the surgeon wouldn't have found the endo cancer! i'm really glad it turned out so well for you

i went and saw my gp (different to the original one, cos she's on maternity leave) and he said that in the letter the gyno sent him nothing cancerous looking was reported. i just have to wait for the path results after the lletz, which is only a week away now.

cheers

kay
