stay in the hospital

Are they going to send me home the same day as the surgery? I am getting total hysterectomy by Da Vinici. I don't want to go home the same day. I had one dr. tell me overnight and the nurse just told me that they might send me home if it is early in the day. Confused!

Re: stay in the hospital

It all depends on your doctor and your insurance but my advice to you is to just speak up ahead of time and be clear with your doctor that if your insurance allows you'd really like to heal at least one night in the hospital. I think most doctors have no problem honoring that request if its made.... they just are never sure unless the patient speaks up.... some want to go home ASAP and would be irritated if they had to stay while others feel neglected when they are pushed out the door too quickly. JUST SPEAK UP AHEAD OF TIME and that'll avoid dissapointment the day of surgery.

Re: stay in the hospital

I was scheduled for a LAVH and my gyn told me he had reservered a room for me if needed. He said I could go home if I wanted to and was feeling okay. But the room was mine just incase I didn't want too. He told me that if he thought I was in too much pain then he would have the final say if I went home. Just tell your dr that you would feel more comfortable if you stayed over night. I ended up having a TAH so I had to stay anyway.

Re: stay in the hospital

I had the same issue, doctor said next day and nurse said later that day. Turned out stayed and even though in pre op phone call they said to prepare in case of staying, never was in doubt as had catheter until the next morning and 24 hour observation. I would just ask right away. It's not worth worrying over for something that can be answered with a quick phone call.

Re: stay in the hospital

Hi,
I had a daVinci. Surgery started at 7:30am and lasted 6 hours. I went home the next day around 3pm.

I do horrible post-surgery with pain and nausea. I gave everybody a heads up and spent a while in recovery. With the daVinci your head is slightly lower than your body for surgery. I had extreme swelling and some other mild complications. Day 2 was better for me and I quickly jumped through all the requirements to get released (walking, bathroom issues, etc).

There are a lot of variables that determine how fast you are released to go home. If there are no complications, you might go home the same day... but you might end up staying overnight.

Best of luck with your surgery and healing journey.

Re: stay in the hospital

I am having a Lap assisted vaginal complete hysterectomy with a bladder sling. My DR said she wants me to stay in the hospital for three days. I see all these posts about going home the same or next day. I wonder why my Dr is wanting me to stay that long? Is this a normal stay after this type of surgery. (I do have asthma and allergies, type 2 diabetes controlled with diet, and have unstable left hip joint I don't know maybe that's why she's wanting to keep me that long.)

Re: stay in the hospital

I'm having the DaVinci on August 27th and my doctor has told me that I'd be out that day. When I talked to pre-registration, they confirmed that my gyn had me listed as an "outpatient". I'm seeing her this Wednesday and I plan on telling her that I need to stay at least one night. I've got great insurance and I plan on taking advantage of it.

My question is: how long did you need to have someone there to take care of you? I'm single and live alone. I feel bad asking friends to come and take care of me (family is not an option). One of my girlfriends said that she's going to stay for at least two nights, but I figure I should be able to get around after that, right? I just plan on laying in bed recovering and getting up and walking around a bit. I plan on taking two weeks off total, three if I really need it, but I definitely don't want someone with me that entire time.

My other question: Is there anyone here who actually went home the same day as surgery and were fine? Do you wish you had stayed at least one night? I'm just having my uterus removed.

Re: stay in the hospital

goddessmn.... I'm having davinchi the same day as you. I'm just having my uterus out. My surgery is at 2:00. I'm thinking I will stay the night?? I would stay 2 or 3 nights if they'd let me.... I have four small kids....I would love the security of a hospital bed. My kids still end up in my bed in the middle of the night. Not sure how that's going to go!!! Best of luck to you! My pre-op is Thursday and I'm trying to come up with a list of questions!

I am also single and live alone. I went home 3 days after my surgery. I was actually quite happy to stay all 3 days. I had planned to only stay 1 night, but I had some complications with blood loss / low blood levels & then I had severe nausea with some vomiting, so I stayed an extra day.

I didn't have anyone stay the night with me at home at all. My mom came for a period of time each day to help me.

I went back to work 8 days after my surgery and she actually worked with me daily for about 8 weeks since I couldn't do any lifting over 5 pounds. (I run a daycare in my home.)

When I was home and not working I really didn't want someone to sit with me all the time. I was fine resting on my own. I had my mom's "grabber" tool with me if I dropped something and my house was set up (prior to my surgery) to make things easy for me. My mom was also only about 5 minutes away from my house in case I really needed her.

You may end up needing someone more / less often. It'll depend on how you feel after the surgery. I'd probably have someone on standby if you can, just in case.

Good luck!!
