Abnormal paps: Unsure what to do

I am 32 years old, I have had abnormal paps since the birth of my daughter 2 years ago. I had a leep in March and since then have been having my period most every week. I went for my first pap since the LEEP today. My doctor and I discussed the options for helping with the bleeding. He said I could do a tubal ligation w/endometrial ablation or a hysterectomy. The hysterectomy would obviously relieve the bleeding but also help with the abnormal cells on my cervix. My husbands first wife died of breast cancer so cancer is a touchy topic here. If we can relieve that by the hysterectomy that would be great. However, I just dont know if a hysterectomy at 32 years old is extreme. Any advice would be appreciated!!! Also, I worry about the hormone issue even though the doctor said they would leave my ovaries, just remove my cervix and uterus.

Re: Unsure what to do

I had a hysterectomy leaving both ovaries April 4, 2012. Recovery was a bit difficult, but I can now happily say I am very glad that I had it done. I also had several bad pap smears in recent years and am very glad to have the " cervical cancer fear" no longer an issue.I had a tubal ligation years ago and It didn't make my periods ant worse or better. I never had an ablation, so can't advise you on that as a good or bad thing.Good luck with whatever you decide, and welcome to hystersisters. This is a great place to research things and ask questions.

Re: Abnormal paps: Unsure what to do

I'm so very sorry you're dealing with all of this. Aside from the sheer madness of bleeding that frequently, it just can't be good for your overall health. You did mention that you've had ongoing issues of cervical abnormalities as well, and it sounds like you have a concern about a possible cancer connection at this point or down the road. Have you thought about consulting a gyn/onc (gynecological oncologist)? They are the experts for gyn cancer/pre-cancer, and we recommend consulting one if possible. They likely would be able to provide more information to help you make an informed treatment decision. Besides, it's always a good idea to get a second opinion prior to having major procedures.

You're more than welcome to post over on our Cancer Concerns forum as well. We cover everything there from abnormal paps, to dysplasias, to cancer, and the ladies will help however they can.

Kudos to you for questioning and listening to your body. We are our own best advocates, after all!

Re: Abnormal paps: Unsure what to do

I have had abnormal paps as well and had the leep done about 13 years ago. I too noticed the bleeding starting to become more aften as well as heavier. After my second child the bleeding and pain was out of control so i had a uterine ablation done which worked for about 7 months then every month my periods would start to become heavier and heavier along w pain, i was then diagnosed with adenomyosis. I had a disnotic lap done and found out that i had scare tissue everywhere. I continued to live with the pain and heavy periods until it became that i was bleeding more days out of the month than not. I went to my gyn and she recommended the lupron shot. I read the material about it and i didnt like the fact i would be put into menopause temporarily and there was a chance this wouldnt help as well. I went and got a second opinion and she immediately recommended a hysterectomcy since i was unable to have anymore children due to the ablation and a tubal her feeling were why go through the luupron if i have all these problems and had a prior leep. I am 9 weeks post op and the only thing that the dr. Couldnt removed was my cervix due to massive scar tissue and adhesions to the bladder. So i still have to go for my annual paps but no more month long periods no more pain. I m extremely happy w the choice i made and i actually have stayed with my second choice dr. Permanently i was very comfotable with her and felt she helped me make a great choice. She did tell me though even if my cervix was able to be removed she still does paps since i had prior dysplasia and those cells can still grow in there. I hope everything works out for you. I kno its a lot to take in and also i was around ur age when all of this was happening to me. Best of luck to you.
