What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

I have suspected i had a prolapse for some time now, but in the recent months my symptoms have gotten worse. I have a heavy feeling in my vagina, urge to urinate all the time, lots of pressure, pain that shoots through my cervix, lower back pain, and painful intercourse, etc. Im going to see my gyn this monday. what should i expect at the initial appoinment?

Re: What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

My Gynocologist did a regular exam, a urine test, & scheduled an internal ultrasound. He told me that I have a cystocele & uterine prolapse & said I need to have my uterus removed. I am afraid, but considering the surgery. The pain is awful. I hope this helps.

Re: What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

thanks for the information. Im very nervous my doctor will tell me i need to have surgery.....this may be TMI- I have visible bulges right inside the vaginal opening and sitting right behind those is my cervix. Im not really sure how to make sense of all this. I am only 26 and none of the women in my family have experienced this. In fact they all looked rather confused when I asked questions about it.

Re: What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

That is one of my problems. My uterus is prolapsed into my vagina. My bladder has dropped. The exam will be pretty much the same as your regular one except they will probably do an internal ultrasound. My cervix is at the vaginal opening so she didn't have far to go to examine me..

Re: What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

Hang in there girlies! The docs can get you fixed up!

My advice to all of you would be to make sure and see a urogynocologist.

They specialize in both aspects and cna do the surgery to repair all. My urogyno examined me differently than the gyno. She had me stand up and then she checked the state of things. Also had me bear down and cough. I know...TMI. But, when things are falling out when you are standing an exam laying down doesn't really show the doc what you are dealing with.

I dealt with bladder, bowel and uterine prolapse for several years before I had surgery. My urogyno said the prolapses can be very major and a person is OK or minor and the person is in discomfort. A very individualized situation. Bottom line is that it won't get better and although the surgery is major, the repairs are amazing!

Re: What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

I would ask what options do you have? Would a pessary work? Is there anything you can do to avoid or delay surgery?

If surgery is necessary what procedures (A & P repair? hyster? bladder sling? Sacral colpopexy?) are needed and how would they be performed (vaginally, DaVinci, laproscopic, mesh repair, suture repair)? What are the surgeon's success rates? How long would you stay in the hospital? What type of anesthesia? Bowel prep before surgery?

You are so young for all of this! BIG HUGS! Bring a friend or family member with you to the doc and write everything down...the stress makes you forget!

After your appointment come talk to us. We can give you more advice or questions to ask based on what your doctor tells you. Do ask though what grade prolapse you have and if you can get by without surgery.

Re: What can i excpect for my first gyn visit for suspected prolapse?

I had prolapse at 5 weeks pregnant with my second son which cleared up, but was diagnosed about six weeks ago, 16 years later, with sudden uterine prolapse stage 3 and am very limited in my daily activities, driving out of town or traveling, thankfully I work from home, so surgery scheduled in 3 weeks. I will say using a pessary has made it possible to wait for surgery but not long term for me as I'm 48 and done with having my kiddos. I find exhaustion to be a factor as well. Had to cancel summer plans, can't wait to be on the road to healing. A pessary may be an option if you wish to forestall surgery for future pregnancies. They really work great and are simple to use.
