Gall bladder problems

I just back from the ER with a gall bladder attack and they wanted to take out my gall bladder as well. sono showed my gall stones are moving around, not stuck in the duct, yet.
I was surprised to see the warnings about hormone therapy and that it increases the potential for gall bladder trouble. Gee I must have missed that when my dr mentioned it??
So what should I do, go off hormones.....YECKS...any suggestions???

Re: Gall bladder problems

My last pregnancy caused severe gall bladder problems which landed me in the hospital for a week with liver failure having it removed when my baby was two months old. Learned later how common it is during pregnancy, also caused early labor. Definite link to hormones in my opinion.

Re: Gall bladder problems

Are you using oral ert? If so, maybe a different method of delivery. I am 13 years post op and have not had any gall bladder problems.

Re: Gall bladder problems

Just wanted to say that if you do have to get the gallbladder out, the surgery isn't that bad. I just had mine out in May - four teeny-tiny incisions done laparscopically. Recovery from the surgery itself was around a week or 10 days.

My recovery took longer since what was causing me to feel so bad apparently wasn't the gallbladder in my case. I finally figured out that my digestive issues seem to be related to the crazy cycles I've had in recent months and am exploring my options now although leaning towards a partial hyster.

But if you have gallstones and need to have it out, don't be afraid of getting it done.

Re: Gall bladder problems

Get that baby removed. I had mine out on June 5, 2012. Man I wish I wish I would have done it a long time ago. I suffered through so many attacks it is hard to even count. I had my doc save me one. I wanted to see it. He saved the biggest one. It is black and the size of a large marble. Mine was diagnosed as the pigment type, believe it was from anemia. I didn't want to end up in the ER with emergency surgery or with my gallbladder rupturing. That really was a simple surgery with easy recovery. Too easy. That's why I wasn't ready for what I'm going through with this one. Hugggsss to you. Hope you feel better. My heart really does go out to you. I know how much pain gallstones cause.

Re: Gall bladder problems

I just wanted to help anyone out there having this surgery, with a bit of info.
I had my gallbladder out this past month. Apparently it had been chronically inflamed with 10+ biggie gallstones. I was quizzed multiple times by the drs and then surgeon of my lack of complaints with it. They would have expected a history of attacks. Instead, I had a simple complaint of chronic lower right back pain so they did an ultrasound to check kidneys and found the rotten thing. That is not at all the typical description of a ticked off gallbladder.

Having said that, I can look back and most likely link other digestive problems Ive struggled with...to it. On the other hand I hadnt really felt any real problems prior to surgery.

Surgery - went fine. Easiest of multiple surgeries the past few years by far. Up and going quickly. My problem and complaint was the huge swelling and bloating starting at the bottom of my ribs. When I questioned the surgeon at check up the next week he shrugged, said it was a matter of healing.

I did know that they blow up your tummy like a puffer fish for the surgery, and expected some muscle soreness. The bloating though remained. Every time I would eat anything I would get the 7month pregnant look, my stomach hard as a rock with bloating. It would take hours to go down, as it went through to stomach cramps. Even a few bites could be a misery. I started making a couple calls and wandering the internet and found out some facts apparently not many surgeons bother to share. They seem to consider the surgery itself their issue and dont even warn you of very possible side effects from this surgery. I was so miserable and frustrated, cause I had no real complaint before and now could not eat a thing! In asking a friend, I also found out a common complaint is when eating anything greasy. Less than 20 minutes later you had better be at a toilet!

I wont go into all of the details on the why it happens and such, there is plenty of info out there on it. What I will do is share a little nugget of gold info I found. It has dramatically helped me! I cant say its perfection, but Ill take 90%!

Probiotics and digestive enzymes. Take them with each meal. They will pitch in and help, so that your liver doesnt feel it needs to dump bile and at the same time wont let anything stay in your stomach and forment causing the bloating. What a simple thing!!

There are all types of brands to choose from. Take your pick. Someone on a forum I found suggested "probiotic multi-enzyme digestive formula" by Spring Valley. You can buy them at Walmart. They were $6.97 for 200 tablets. Very reasonable!

Anyone struggling with a gallbladder or gastro problems might also want to give them a try. It sure helped me out tons! I know they don't remove stones, but perhaps they might help the original poster while she looks into options? I do know they have some meds out there to help dissolve, but they do take a year plus. It wasnt a rotten surgery, but still best to keep if you can.

Re: Gall bladder problems

OMG, this last post is huge for me. As I said previously, I had my gallbladder removed 16 years ago following my last pregnancy. Since then I have been plagued with IBS type diarrhea which I understand happens to many after gallbladder surgery from the liver dumping bile. I've managed it with a half imodium daily but will definitely try the above Walmart tabs for a more consistent and healthy treatment. Thank you so much for your post!

Re: Gall bladder problems

Had mine out about ten years ago. They believed it was triggered by my following the Atkins diet. Once it was out my pain was gone.

Like pp said, bowels can be an issue with greasy foods. This appears to be true for most people without a gb. I can deal with it though. It's definitely manageable whereas the gb pain was not. Best of luck to you.

Re: Gall bladder problems

I hope it helps!
When I went searching for it, I didnt see it right off among the other stomach type medications. I finally went to ask the pharmacist for help. We eventually found it in with other supplements having the "sun valley label". While we were looking, she told me if we couldnt find it, there was a prescription you can get. When we did find the bottle, she read the label and nodded... said they had the same ingredients as the prescription.
At the time I bought both this bottle and another that had large amounts of probiotics hoping to just get my system straightened back out. Im a week out from that now and just taking the Sun Valley bottle only with great results. I hope it helps you! It would be nice if doctors would educate you about these possibilities but from my searches it seems thats rare.
