Advantages of Menopause

I went through surgical menopause nearly 4 weeks ago. Even at 55, I was still producing the follicle-stimulating hormone and was still having regular periods and everything else until about 6 weeks before my surgery.

So, for the first time in over 25 years, I haven't had sore breasts and annoying monthly cysts in my breasts (that sent me to my gynecologist in a lot of fear the first time that happened).

I had over 15 years of periods that, at times, were more painful than most of the days following a hysterectomy. Sometimes, I'd sit in my recliner with a heating pad after taking mega-doses of Aleve and still be in pain.

For the last few years, I had at least one 5 minute crying jag around my period.

I've always been on the emotional side and somewhat bad tempered. I remember getting a good laugh from reading "The Wisdom of Menopause," where the writer said "Menopause helps put you in touch with your anger." This was nutty to me because I've been in touch with my anger at least since the age of 5. I don't know if finally getting through menopause will make me more even tempered, but I'm a little more aware of it.

Re: Advantages of Menopause

Well that is looking at the bright side of things. I began my period when I was 9 yrs of age. My hysterechtomy was at age 51. Every one of those during those 43 yrs were a pain in the you know what! Even though I'm having other symptoms that I never had before my surgery, the only thing I can say is, I don't have to shell out the money for feminine supplies anymore. And thank the good Lord I never had any mood swings. I am very lucky!

Congrats to you that you've done a great job on your recovery process.

Re: Advantages of Menopause

Awesome!!! I am 51 and three weeks post op from a total lap with ovaries. I have not felt this good in a decade...truly my mood and outlook is great. No more sore boobs and weird food cravings. I do have hot flashes but I am determined to treat with my vegetarian diet and excercise.

Re: Advantages of Menopause

I know hot flashes can be debilitating, but I've mostly had them for about 10 minutes after dinner. Compared to periods, they're nothing.
