I'm not exactly sure. I was convinced I would be one of the lucky one's who didn't have any issues. Never had UTI or anything else in that area. I found I was not. Lol. Took me several hours to pee and then wasn't that great at it then. I've been lucky in the fact that I have been able to pee since day after surgery but its different. Never realize what we take for granted huh? I still have to focus. It feels different before if I pushed I went now if I push I stop. I personally think there could be several reasons. We have a catheter (my first one), they mess around in that area so I'm sure bladder gets jostled around a bit and we have organs that fill up that area removed. I had a vag that converted to an abdominal. So all my stuff's messed up lol. I think our bladder is in shock and has to relearn. I'm not sure if this will help. My DH helped me, he had been in a really bad accident and his bladder was ruptured so he was ready with answers for my issues. First time I tried to pee and it didn't come I panicked which of course made it impossible to pee. He came in and we just started chatting about stuff. I didn't realize it but once I relaxed and forgot about it I pee'd a little. It has gotten much better with time. I find it easier if my bladder is really full. I drink a ton of water. Shutting door and emailing or reading and just taking my time has helped. Also running water really helps. Hang in there. Hope it get better for you soon

Re: What makes us unable to pee?

Thanks , it was the one thing I was most scared of , and it happend ! It's been 10 days , 7 with a foley cath as I could not pee . I trickled twice yesterday and today but that's it . So I have to self cath . Which is way better than foley , but I am so freaked that I will give myself and infection even when I wipe and wash my hands 100 times ... I HAVE had bladder issues in the past so that was why I was worried ! Just praying it get better . Thanks for the info :-)

Re: What makes us unable to pee?

Bless your heart!! I give huge hats off to you. I don't know if I would be able to self cath. I'm a big baby. DH would probably have to do it for me which would make him very unhappy. Lol. I do hope things get better soon. I'm still having bad days had one today actually. I'm always been pretty healthy, so having a hard time accepting my body won't do jus bc I say so. Lol. I've been having bowel probs so I understand the frustration. I've decided to quit stressing about it and bought a few enemas figure just do that every couple of days and I'll be good. Wouldn't ya know as soon as I quit worrying bout it my bowels are back to normal. Go figure huh? Maybe this will happen for you. Stress does amazing things to our bodies. I really do hope things get better like tomorrow for you. I wonder if there is some kind of med dr could prescribe for you. I remember vaguely about a friend of mine years ago going on some kind of diet and she couldn't pee at all. Dr gave her a script that turns her pee bright orange but it made her able to pee. Just a thought

Re: What makes us unable to pee?

Yw!! That's our problem ya know. Sounds like we are both young and not used to being under the weather. My DH goes back to work tomorrow too. I lost forty lbs before the surgery. So have reintroduced myself to my love of chips a hoy choc chip cookies and milk. Lol!! Figure I deserve it. We are gonna get through this. I don't know why you had to have your hysterectomy. Mine was for endo cancer. Hell I spent the last 10yrs being chronically anemic ( which makes ur immune system low so you catch every sniffle) I've had two blood tranfusions and countless days of uncontrollable bleeding. Hell when I think back to how bad I should have been feeling and how I pushed my body through all of this to work everyday and kept quite active. Now that I think about all that lord my body can do anything. Lol. I'm not gonna know what to do with myself when I actually feel good. Didn't know I didn't feel good before. Lol. I really am gonna be superwoman.holler at me anytime you like. I'll be locked in house too I promise. Lol.

Re: What makes us unable to pee?

. Just thought I would throw in my theories about not being able to pee (I had a catheter for a week post-op). The anesthesia slows muscle contractions & control, so this may play a part (although, I have been able to pee after surgeries that werent in pelvis). Also, pain medication post-op can cause urine retention along with the commonly known constipation side effect (I think its partly pain meds for me). Like paxton said- they move everything around & mess with stuff that doesnt like getting messed with during the surgery. Also, after a catheter has been placed irritation occurs. The irritation in some is enough to keep them from being able to pee om their own- could be bladder or tube irritation/spasm. When they put the foley back in at the they said I should wait at least 5days before trying to take it out & trying going "like a big girl". covering said each time it goes back in the wait begore removing it gets longer bc the spasming gets worse.
Best wishes to you! May we always get to go pee "in the potty like big girls" from here on

Re: What makes us unable to pee?

I'm just about done with week 3 and am just now starting to regain the ability to pee on my own. I had a Foley for a week, and have been self-cathing for 2.

My theory is that some people's bladders react badly to being pushed around during surgery, and to all the pelvic swelling that occurs after surgery. I'm regaining the ability to pee at about the same time that the swelling is finally really starting to go down and I don't think it's a coincidence. It's been 3 weeks and there are only a few other people on the boards who have to wait that long or longer to get their bladder function back, but the urologist I've been seeing has assured me that I will get it back and that what's needed is time.

Don't be afraid of self-cathing -- it's a much better option than Foley catheters in my opinion. Remember how, once upon a time when you were 12, learning to use a tampon seemed impossible? It's pretty similar to that -- it's all about getting familiar with a part of your body that you thought was off-limits. It starts off a little tricky, and fairly quickly gets easy. These days I do it without even looking in the mirror.

Re: What makes us unable to pee?

I can handle the self cath thing ok , I am just worried about getting a bladder infection . And the spasms don't help either . I tried once with out a mirror and it ended up in my Vigina. I think that the last two time I cath that it seemed to be getting pushed out . Idk maybe it's my imagination . Wonder what it means if it pushing it out ? Thank you ladies it's nice to know I am not alone and crazy !
