Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Aug 20-Aug 26,2012

Hi everyone I'm day 4 post op and finally home, I was meant to come home yesterday but Friday night my son was brought into A&E by his dad following an allergic reaction to some food he had eaten, I was very concerned but the staff allowed me to go be with him and he was eventually discharged but because of the stress and amount of walking I had done (amazing how adrenaline keeps you mobile ) yesterday I was rather poorly and they refused to allow me home. Now that I am I feel relieved but am still extremely sore and slow and defo need pain relief often. Also no bm as yet an I'm nervous for when I do have one cus I have is anyway :/

Thank you all for the tips. I was never told about the CO2 gas issues, so the back pain was a surprise. I also had really sharp shoulder pain and just assumed I had slept wrong and pinched a nerve. The pain was worse than my surgery pain on day 2. I used a heating pad and it helped though. Now it seems to be gone, thank goodness.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Aug 20-Aug 26,2012

I spent half the night in the ER last night. I couldn't stop puking and nothing was helping me poop, so the nurse was afraid I might have had a bowel obstruction. Luckily that was not the case. They gave me an enema which finally got things moving although they don't think it cleared it all out by the amount I went so I need to keep working on getting more out. I was also given IV fluids since I couldn't keep anything down and was getting dehydrated and then they gave me some zofran in my IV to help the nausea. They also ran some labs which were all normal. We were there for 4 hours so I was exhausted. I feel bad for my husband as he had to get up with the kids this morning. He's too stubborn to call anyone to come watch the kids so he can nap though, so that's his problem. I am feeling much better today, but still feel yucky. I don't feel like I have to puke anymore, so that is good, but my head is still light headed like it has been since my surgery and my stomach still doesn't feel great. I stopped taking the vicodin because I don't want anything to make me more constipated and I was doing alright without it last night. I am just alternating Ibuprofen and Tylenol now instead and that seems to be doing good. I hope everyone else is feeling better than me. Take care.

I'm sorry you are having so many problems... Don't forge the stool softener . I'm grateful that my recovery is going as well as it is. I only took ibuprofen this morning and have been on the couch drinking coffee for 2 hours :-). I've also switched from pads to liners seeing as how I never really needed the pads in the first place. I'm hardly doing anything down there! finally lol!!! have a good Sunday

I'm thinking the same thing. Day 4. Yes, it's been uncomfortable and painful at times, but not bleeding and having to use a super plus tampon with a pad and STILL leaking through has been great. Hurray for no more crazy periods!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Aug 20-Aug 26,2012

After 14 + years of pain and excessive bleeding, I was diagnosed with endometriosis, adenomyosis and pelvic congestive disease after my laproscopy and hysteroscopy on 7/24/12. I finally found a doctor who would listen to my very real concerns. After research and talking with my doctor, my husband and I chose to have a hysterectomy. My surgery was on Tuesday, 8/21. I was the first scheduled surgery for my doctor, so everything ran right on time. This was a vaginal hysterectomy, leaving both ovaries intact, though my doctor warned me that at some point in the future they may need to come out as well.

The day of the surgery I felt great. I was laying in bed, dozing in and out. The following day was not so hot. I was scheduled to go home, but had begun being sick and having a great deal of pain. The decision was made to keep me overnight. I was given a "cocktail" of dilaudid, super strong motrin, and phenergan for nausea. I didn't wake up until they brought my dinner in. : )

So I have been home for going on 4 days now. I'm at peace with my decision and am ready to begin this new life I have in store. In fact, just as soon as I get the go ahead, I will be signing up for a swimming exercise class - Something I've always wanted to do but couldn't due to my situation.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Aug 20-Aug 26,2012

I had a tvh on Friday. Doing surprisingly well. Came home on Saturday, much to my dismay. I was hoping to stay longer because being in pain at home is my worst nightmare. But I am actually getting more rest at home because the hospital was so noisy. Managing to stay on to of my pain, although I did have a tearful moment or two late last night. My boyfriend keeps telling me that I don't look like I had surgery. I remind him that I certainly feel it. Overall the experience was not as bad as I thought it would be. I remember an oxygen mask being put on my face and then being told to wake up. Was in a LOT of pain when I made it to my room and couldn't find the call button. Was in tears when someone finally checked on me. Amazingly, I was up walking late Friday night, in fact all night after they removed the catheter I had to use the bathroom constantly. I'm sure the nurses were thrilled. It was not fun walking but it got fractionally easier over time. Nervous now about the possibility of being alone tonight.

Of pain in the recovery room and early in the day. By About 7 PM my nurses and I had it under control. Then came Nurse Ratchet. She purposely made me call and then wait 10 minutes to come down. She wouldn't give me all of my scheduled meds -- said since I had been up to the bathroom and passed gas that I should get ready to go home shouldn't need pain meds. That was at 4AM... 19 hours postop!! My surgeon
Came in and was furious. They got me back on track and I decided to go home at 2 PM. The day after surgery. I'm feeling ok at home. My parents were supposed to have the children so I could rest and my husband could work. But this morning my mom ended up in ER with pneumonia!! My pain is fine on the meds, but about 5 hours after the meds I need more. I'm a bit concerned about this cough and scratchy throat. I hope I'm not getting sick! Coughing is excruciating with the stitches inside! Hugs and love to everyone else in this postop timeframe...
What an awful experience with your nurses. So sorry you had to go through that. Staying on top of your pain is important to getting you through your recovery. If you don't want to take your prescription pain med all day (which I didn't), try to throw in some Tylenol or Advil. I'm not a nurse, that's just what I tried and it worked, also kept my head from feeling loopy 24/7. I had the cough as well for a few days (my surgery was 7/24), but it goes away. I think it must be from them inserting the tube in your throat during surgery. You're right, it does hurt. I got a small pillow that I held to my belly when I needed to cough. It seemed to help by giving it some support or something. Not sure exactly how it worked, but it did.
All the best for a speedy recovery!

Thank you accounting chic! I appreciate your thoughtfulness and help. Today is emotional for some reason. I am blaming it on the fact that they had to biopsy my ovaries and touch them and move them. They maybe messed up my hormones! I actually did take the narcotics all day today and it was kind of nice. No pain, lots of naps.... Haha. I wish I could do more but I know I will regret it. So slow and steady...
