Weird skin reaction

I went to remove my patch tonight. The skin underneath this past week was red and itchy in one area. I have rubbed at it but not excessively and have it covered with tegaderm. There are two red raised lines that are almost shiny like a burn but also resemble the reaction I get from a contact allergy to nickel. Should I be concerned? I seem to be doing really well on it otherwise and have actually been sleeping through the night, which I was not doing on the vivelle dot. Any thoughts?

Re: Weird skin reaction

You could see what happens with the next patch. I had some redness and irritation at first but it went away. Keep an eye on it and make sure you're cleaning the area with alcohol prior to putting the patch on.

Re: Weird skin reaction

My first patch I had no reaction. Second one, similar to what you describe.
We'll see what happens with the third one, but I will definitely talk to my doc this week at my post op appointment.

Tried oral HRT last year, before hyst, and it did not work.

Hmmmm.

Re: Weird skin reaction

make sure the skin is really dry when you put it on. I found those red spots show up more when for various reasons there is more moisture under the patch ( showers, pool, not as secure as was when first applied etc). Cortisone cream helps it go away.

Re: Weird skin reaction

I went to see a new obgyn and she didn't like the reactions I was getting so she put me on an oral estrogen/progestin. I guess there is only one oral kind of the 2 together. So far, eh? I was just starting to feel normal again, brain fogwise, sleeping, etc. and I feel I'm not sleeping as well again. I guess I'm in a waiting pattern here for now.

Re: Weird skin reaction

Do you know why your doctor prescribed PremPro? Doesn't make sense to me to add Progestin when your issue is the patch? There are other forms of estrogen. Just a bit confused why your doctor would add the progesterin to the mix when you were doing okay except for a reaction to the adhesive in the patch.

Re: Weird skin reaction

After my excision/hysterectomy, my surgeon started me off with the vivelle dot .1 right away in recovery. I was aware of the nurses putting it on me. I knew my lone ovary had not survived the procedure. I had no skin reaction to it, but just did not feel right; major insomnia, brain fog, jittery, low libido. As I had been hoping to keep the ovary, I was not prepared or informed in the ways of HRT and I was confused whether I was feeling the effects of the estrogen being too low or too high. I had my surgery in Atlanta and reside in Connecticut. My RE here at home wanted to put me on the combipatch with my history of severe endometriosis. A couple of weeks into wearing the combipatch, I was feeling pretty good. I was sleeping through the night, I was feeling closer to normal. My urogynocologist felt I needed extra vaginal estrogen and put me on estrace .2 cream. It made the area feel irritated, but for a couple of days after, was feeling better again. And then, the patch started forming itchy welts and a rash. I was starting with a new regular obgyn at this point who didn't like the reaction and changed me to the pill. I realized also that I had a contact allergy to an ingredient in the lubricant that we were using. It has all been so overwhelming with so many "cooks" in the kitchen! I have just been trying to get back on my feet, my work is stressful and I'm getting back into strength training classes again. It is a lot to figure out. I know I have rambled on here. Thanks for listening.

Re: Weird skin reaction

Are you keeping a journal? That can be extremely helpful in balancing things out.

Re: Weird skin reaction

That's OK as long as you are aware of the WHI study and you are knowingly taking this where there might be potential health issues with the progestin in your medicine.

There are a lot of other orals out there (some bioidentical) and a bio identical pharmacy-made progesterone (prometrium).
