UGH! Bowel Movements

OK, I need someone else's opinion. I had TAH last Wednesday morn...released Friday afternoon...still haven't had a BM. I'm supposed to call my DD today to set up two week checkup and I know he'll ask if anything's happened! Any advice on home remedies (since I can't drive yet and DH won't be home until really late). I've tried Karo syrup in water and it didn't work! I know someone's had a similar problem...feedback?!

Ugh! bowel movements

Wayscared,

I just had TAH/BSO on FRI Jan 18. I used prune juice and lots of water and walking to get things moving. I really didn't like the juice and I hated getting my tired, sore body up from the couch, but I was more scared that I might follow the route my mother took two years ago with her TAH - she was re-hospitalized at two weeks post-op (for nine days) due to bowel obstruction.
Hope this helps.

UGH! Bowel Movements

Many of the ladies say that warm prune juice is the key. Personally, I don't like prune juice but apple juice will fix me up just fine. I had 2-3 cups of apple juice a day and I really didn't have any problems. When you call the doctor, make sure to tell him/her the truth though. He/she might be able to give you something to help out. Take care and let us know how you're doing.

water water water!!!!!! And lots of it!!! Prune juice works form what I hear but ewwww, I dont like it either. Try apple like nancy suggested. When you call your doc today tell him your problems and he will probably call you in a stool softener/laxative or suggest an over the counter one. My doc suggested the colace stool softner and it worked for me but ask your doc. Also, if you are on any pain meds that might be making the problems worse....something else to think about! Hope you feel better soon!

Boy I am opposite...

every time I get up to walk I gotta poo.
I had surgery same day I drink gobs of apple juice, I have pretty much stayed on a soup and toast lunch and dinner with juice and decaf. tea...and lots o' oatmeal for breakfeast. I eat only whole grain bread and triscuits and have been drinking broth for snacks, I battled with a rectrocele so I definatly do not want to have to strain to go.....it was very hard to stay away from the enchiladas I made and froze for them last nite but I knew I had to poo!!! LOL
Good Luck!!!

To Poo or Not to Poo

OOOOH. I had the same problem, rectocele and constipation. Mile of Magnesia really helped. Walking, walking, walking. You don't have to walk fast, just do it. Drink lots of fluids. I also take a stool softener every night before bed. Hope that helps. Your dr will be able to tell you what to do.

Take care,
KD

UGH! Bowel Movements

My doctor told me to walk, walk, walk! I did, and it did work for constiaption. When I got home, I was still constipated for several weeks. I took Metamucil. I swear by that stuff! It always makes my bowels move. Tastes good, too...orange flavored. It will also act as a stool softener.

I was on twice a day stool softeners. When that didn't work they had me try milk of magnesia. When that didn't work, ducalax (a suppository) was added to the mix. That worked. Once things got going, walking and water worked. I had my surgery on a Friday and I think my first bowel movement was on a Tuesday night.

UGH! Bowel Movements

I am 6 days post -op..as soon as I walked in the door I drank 2x's a day some Critacel and took 1 Colace at nite. Started having my BM's on day 4 and OUCH the first one HURT! But after that they seem more "normal". I do, do my share of walking around here and there and today I will go out and about for the first time to "get some air" and see the beautiful snow outside! Hope that the walking continues to help me stay regular. Also changed from white to wheat bread since I have been having lots of toast....Hope you get some relief soon!

UGH! Bowel Movements

HI, I didnt have a bowel movement for 5 days after my surgery. I was so worried. What finally helped me was prune juice. Oh and stool softners are a must.
