anemia due to fibroids

Hi ladies I'm really glad I ound this site because I'm freaking out a bit. For the last 8 years or so I have had awful, long periods. I'm unable to take bc pills because they make me sick and thought I might want another child so didn't consider ablation. I lived with it but every month it got worse. Fastforward to 11 weeks ago whem I decided to get the depo shot. After a month of heavy bleeding and clotting I called the clinic where I got my shot. They assured me everything was "normal". This past friday (11 weeks after starting depo) I started dropping clots the size of my fist. I felt progressively worse through the weekend. By tuesday afternoon I was very week and went to the er. My hemoglobin was 7 and I was admitted to the hospital. The next morning I was 6 and they did a transfusion. It turns out I have fibroids. Before releasing me my new gyno gave me megastrol to stop the bleeding. That worked a couple days and this morning I was bleeding heavily again and clotting. New gyno was out of town so her office told me to go to the er. My hemoglobin was better. Er doctor said this cycle of heavy bleeding / anemia is going to continue until my uterus is gone and he thinks I need a hysterectomy. Of course I will have to discuss options with my new dr next week. Part of me has felt so bad for so long that I want this done yesterday and part is scared to death. Any suggestions, anyone with a similiar situation that wants to share would be appreciated.

Re: anemia due to fibroids

Almost the same situation as you. My hemaglobin dropped to a 5 and the ER doc said if they didn't transfuse me, I would be dead by morning. I was admitted into intensive care and received 4 units of blood. My GP called a specialist 2 hours away and he scheduled me for emergency surgery for 3 days later. I was transferred to the new hospital for the surgery. My fibroid was massive and surgery took 6 hours.

If I can give you one bit of advise, please have this taken care of as soon as you can. Despite what other web-sites say, fibroids are dangerous. I have not gotten over the emotional effects yet. Physically I am able to go out although I am still giving my body the time it needs to recover. The tumor was 14lbs.

Nobody wants this surgery, but for me it was a life saving measure. I must say that I am quite happy to wear white! (Live in Florida)

Good wishes to you and let us know how you are doing.

.

Hi, I am anemic as well with heavy bleeding and fibroids. For me each month is getting worse. I also cannot do bc pills or have an ablation due to other medical issues so I went to see gyn specialist who went over other options that were best for my situation. Since I am done with having kids I decided to do a hysterectomy as I feel it's the best option for me. Get referrals for another dr and research the options out there. I know I am tired of being so tired and bleeding to death. I decided its time to enjoy my life again. Good luck to you!

Re: anemia due to fibroids

Hi, I basically had the same problem. I was anemic due to many fibroids. Each month my condition got worse and worse. My ob/gyn recommended ablation. I tried that and it worked for a couple of months. Slowly things progressively got worse. The fibroids returned and the bleeding last longer and longer. I was passing enormous blood clots. The Dr recommended at the point to get the hysterectomy. I knew I couldn't continue living from month to month with the excruciating pain, accidents (leaks), headaches, it was just too much. I am now 8 months post op and I do not regret having the procedure. Things are great. It took a little adjusting but things are fine. I'm 48 and I already have two beautiful daughters. The decision for me was a no brainer.

If you are unsure ask your Dr. plenty of questions before making any decisions. After all it is a life changing decision that will greatly impact your life. Be aware that everyone's story is going to be different. So go ahead and create your own happiness. By the way, I bought a white summer dress for the first time in a ages!

Good luck to you!

Re: anemia due to fibroids

Hi julsis39!
Your story sounds similar to mine....for the past 8 almost 9 years I have had heavy bleeding during my periods and of course they are more frequent than just once per month. At first I never really thought about it, I just thought it was due to me giving birth 3 times in 29 months and I dealt with it each time. Almost 3 years ago I went to my regular family doctor for an earache. They checked me over, checked my blood etc. my hemoglobin was at a 5, my doctor told me that was dangerously low and I should see my obgyn and needed blood transfusions. I did not follow through (I know-shame on me!). So for the last 3 years at least my hemoglobin has been quite low, of course I've been TIRED. At times I have thought "I do not have the energy to breathe"!
In November of 2012 I finally went to see my obgyn...he recommended a hysterectomy because of several fibroids, largest one 7cm.
I don't like the thought of that at all and have not yet agreed to surgery. I would really like to still think about another baby.
I am however happy to report that I was at the doctor for something totally unrelated but requested they check my hemoglobin and it's up almost double to a 9.5 (with 320mg iron tablets taken daily)!!

Re: anemia due to fibroids

9.5 is still a low hemoglobin.

Re: anemia due to fibroids

hi Hardin 5!
I am so worried about you! 5 is such a dangerously low hemoglobin and can start affecting organs at that point. You probably barely did have the energy to breathe! I'm glad it's higher but as Petrified said it's still not in the normal range. Please take care of yourself whether you choose to have surgery or not
