Could progesterone cream be causing hot flashes?

I have been taking a low dose of estrogen/testosterone and progesterone cream for about two months. For the past two weeks, I am having constant hot flashes, especially at night. I am not sleeping because of the hot/cold variations constantly awakening me. My doctor prescribed this after testing my hormones and realizing that my levels had dropped precipitously since my partial hysterectomy a year ago. I am tempted to go off the natural hormones, but they have helped my mood swings. Can't decide which is worse, but I really do need some sleep! I am 48 and otherwise in good health. I am also at a high risk of breast cancer which is another concerning factor with the hormones. (Radiation to chest after Hodgkins Disease in 87). I am assuming no they will recommend more estrogen, but that concerns me too.

I am assuming you kept your ovaries? Could it be that you are having fluctuating levels causing your symptoms? I would also suggest that you have a thyroid panel done as that can cause symptoms also.

Re: Could progesterone cream be causing hot flashes?

You might have less in the way of hot flashes if your Dr. could simply leave the progesterone out of the mix. Or, at the very least, separate the 3 so that you could make adjustments without needing a whole new cream anytime there is one adjustment. If the estradiol level is low, adding progesterone seems to intensify the low estrogen symptoms.

Re: Could progesterone cream be causing hot flashes?

Thank you both. My thyroid is not present (radiation damage casualty), but my levels are checked very regularly. I think you are right that the progesterone is too high. Luckily, the doctor separated the creams so I can adjust. I will call tomorrow. Getting the balance right is very tricky! I did not use the progesterone last night or today and I am already feeling a bit less "hot."
