pre-op nerves

I have been ready to have this hyster. for at least 5 years and finally made the decision to have it. So, my question is - why less than 2 weeks away does it make me feel somewhat depressed that I am doing it? I have never been someone who bases their womanhood on having a uterus, so it surprises me that I feel this way. Any help?

My surgery is just next week. I've known about it for several months and go through bouts of putting it completely out of my head and complete anxiousness about it!!

I don't know if my nerves/anxiety has to do with the uterus being gone, per se (being an "incomplete woman" as some might say) but I do know where you're coming from.

Hope it is a quick and easy surgery/recovery for you!

Mary,

I went through the same thing. I went from wanting it over, to being completely depressed about it. The day of my surgery I was all excited that the day had finally come, and as soon as we parked the car, my husband had to literally drag me into the hospital. I never realized the thousands of emotions that went along with having this surgery, both before and after. I thank God every day for finding this site just 2 weeks before my surgery. It helped ease my mind, just by talking to others that have gone through hysterectomy, and talking to others that were in the waiting process. Good luck with your surgery.

Hi Mary,
I know what you mean. I was thrilled when my DR said we should do the hyster, but with a week to go my nerves are on end & I can cry at the drop of hat at absolutely nothing! I guess it's just all part of the package! Good luck on the 11th!
cbersister, we are sisters & will keep you in my thoughts & prayers on the 7th!

Mary, I feel that way too -- I go to the castle 2 days after you.

I don't know if it's biological or cultural. I've never wanted kids, don't worry about not feeling like a woman without a uterus. I guess, though, that I liked knowing I could change my mind about carrying a baby -- and now I won't be able to. I don't like closing doors permanently; I *hate* feeling trapped or limited. There's a big difference between choosing not to walk through an open door and having a door closed and locked.

I think it must be biological. I have a 19 yr. old daughter and a 17 yr old son. I think there must be something way in the subconcious that brings on depression over having the uterus removed even tho one is completely ready for the procedure in every way!!!
