LIW - New Here - My Story (Long - I

Hi everyone. I found this site a few weeks ago and have been reading constantly, and I've learned lots to help in preparation with my doctor and late-night discussions with my DH.
Here's my story:

In 1995, I gave birth via c-Section (vertical) to a beautiful daughter. I had gained 70 pounds during pregnancy, but at the time could not figure out why, as I really did not eat quite as much as I did pre-pregnancy. A year and a half later, we found out that I am hypoglycemic (low blood sugar), and they felt I had this during my pregnancy, which caused rapid weight gain because I was eating all the wrong things.

I have been on BCPs since I was 16 (am now 30) because of irregular and heavy periods. After our daughter was born, my periods became longer, going from 3-4 days, to 6-9 days. I was changed from one dose of BCP to one of the highest doses available. Not much help. Migraines got worse as well as the cramping, low back pain, and leg aches.

My doctor retired and I was given a referrel to a new group. After my first few visits, I felt really comfortable with my new doctor. His desk had many magazines and manuals and other literature on women's health issues, all current. I discussed my problems with him on my first visit. We waited 6 months for the new BCPs to kick in, but alas, they were still no help. He wanted to try me on Lupron injections. I had 3 rounds and very little relief from pain, plus it brought about new symptons.

He then sent me to a gastroenterologist for evaluation, to rule things out in that area. This doctor performed a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - a short version of a colonoscopy - but did not find much of anything and chalked it up to IBS. At this point, my GYN decided he wanted to a Lap to see what was going on.

This was in February 2001. He found scar tissue from the c-Section had grown up and surrounded my appendix and part of my bowel and nailed it to the wall on my right side. He lasered it off, and he also found two cysts that he drained.

Things were fairly good for about 4 months after that. Periods were back to around 5-6 days, but the pelvic pain, cramping, bloating, aches, migraines were still there. One full week before my period and the entire time I have my period, these symptoms never subside, but as soon as the period is over, everything seems pretty normal.

In December, I went back for my annual pap, which luckily for me has always been "normal", but when I mentioned the pain to him, he asked why I had not told him sooner. I told him I wanted to give it time to see if it would work itself out. I hated to feel like I was running at the first sign of pain. I had just gotten used to feeling like that I guess. He wanted me back in January for an ultrasound, which revealed two small cysts around my ovaries.

Hello there Kristy!

Welcome to hysterstisters! When I first found this place I read everything I could get my eyes on. I can't tell you how much this helped me get through it all. I know that you will find valuable information and lots of compassionate, caring ladies.

Wow! You sure have being down a rocky road with your OB problems. It is so frustrating when the pain won't go away. Its like getting little glimspes of being normal when, pow, it knocks you off of your feet once again. Is your doc suggesting a hysterectomy at this point or is he exploring other non-invasive ways to correct the problem?

I went the route of meds and hormones and D&C's before my doc decided that surgery was necessary. Its a big decision which you can't back once you make it. Keep doing the research, knowledge is your best armor. Post all you want whether its to ask questions or vent or just to share some news you received. This is a wonderful support center.

Hugs,

Hysterectomy or not

Hello Kristy!
I am new to this website also. In trying to post my own letter, I came upon yours, and decided to reply instead. If it helps you at all, I had a thermal ablation about a year and a half ago. The reason was heavy bleeding and clotting. I was starting PMS immediately after ovulation, waiting about 10 to 14 days for a period, then bleeding for about 6 or 7 days. Most of the month was a misery. The procedure helped for a while but now, my periods seem to be gradually returning to the old tricks.

I am considering a hysterectomy now, but having a real hard time making the decision. I will be having a pelvic sono soon.

I do have a question for you, what is BCP? It sounds like something you were taking for the heavy bleeding. Also, I am embarrassed to say, what is a LAP?

thanks for listening!
Sue

Hi,

I'm sorry you had such a rough road!

*Psssssssssst Sue-BCP=Birth Control Pills and LAP=laproscopic (as in LAVH) *

You have cysts around your ovaries, or on your ovaries? Have you gotten more than just this one opinion?

No Ctsts

Hi no cysts at all found so far. Still having a p/sono on Sat 3-16.

I figured out the BCP thing, but was totally clueless to TAH and LAP! Thanks for the help!

I have only been seeing my current doctor for an opinion. I have changed doctors since the thermal ablation. I have faith in this md, but I may look for a second opinion after I hear the results of the sono and any other tests she orders. I would like to have a LAP. Do you need to be in the hospital for that?

Thanks

Thanks for so many replies! I been thru some other specialists with no luck of finding anything. I've been on BCPs for 14 years, except for a year, and let me tell you, I couldn't take the pain and the days to weeks bleeding. The laparoscopy did reveal major scar tissue and a cysts on my ovary, which the doc drained. Things were going pretty good for a few months, then it has started getting worse again. Lupron didn't really help, and I'm on the strongest BCP. The doc found another cyst on my ovary in an abdominal ultrasound. My last pap when examined, I just about jumped off the table - never have I done that. Some pain with sex and always feeling bloated and sore in the pelvic region a day or two afterwards. He believes it to be adenomyosis. Before my lap, he thought there were signs of endo, but due to the Lupron which is supposed to shrink endo, he could not tell if I ever had it, and he couldn't rule it out.

I feel like I've examined at all my options, since this has been going on for a while, and while there are probably some other things that could be done, they are pretty much only temporary. I am 30, and that is young, but my family is complete and I don't want to be like my mother and suffer until menopause. I'm ready, nervous and a tad scared, but ready. He will go back thru my c-Section scar (vertical - naval to pubic area), leave my ovaries if possible, get the appendix out since it was pretty scarred from the scar tissue, and cut out the old scar.

This is such a wonderful site for comfort, answers, suggestions and great ideas. Thanks so much everyone!
