pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
My castle visit is Wednesday (nerves? What nerves? ), and I'm a bit freaked out about the IV, 'cuz they generally hurt -- not just going in but the whole time they're in.
Today the pre-op nurse told me they could give me a teeny injection with a teeny needle of local anesthesia in my arm to numb the area before the IV is inserted. Anyone had this done? How did it work?
(BTW, Granny Moon, I love your nickname! Makes me think of "Goodnight, Moon.")
Thanks,
Melissa

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
Melissa,
I've had IV's both ways, with and without numbing medicine.
A small injection of numbing medicine is very common practice before inserting an IV in the hand. Depending on your pain tolerance IV insertions can hurt , however, once the IV is in, the pain should go away after about 5 minutes. Any longer than that and you should ask to have it looked at. With the numbing medicine, there is barely any discomfort and once it wears off, there shouldn't be any at all.
A couple of hints that might help you with this: the day before surgery, make sure that you are well hydrated. Drink lots and lots of water. This helps keep your veins nice and "juicy". Easily accessable veins means quicker IV. One shot and it's in. And as anxious as you may be, do try and relax. Know that it can be uncomfortable, but it's over quickly. Keep yourself focused on something other than the IV. Talk to someone while the IV is being put in, don't watch it. You already know it's happening so having a different conversation can avert some of your attention away from it.
The nurses and anesthesia people in surgical areas are used to people being anxious about IV's. They are going to help you through it. They will tell you everything they are doing. They want you to be as comfortable as possible.
Good luck. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
I had the small injection prior to IV insertion. It was a tiny sting, then that was it. I didn't feel the IV.
Hope it all goes well for you!!!

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
I wish I had had that local before they punctured me!
The "A" guy had to start an IV in the fold of my right arm then moved it once I was under to my left hand. My veins are very hard to stick and I had one blow while in the castle. And IV infiltration isn't fun! I just now have gotten rid of the excess fluid I was holding in my arms and legs. Revealing nice bruises.
Not saying this to scare anyone, just what happened to me.

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
Hi Melissa
Getting the numbing medicine first is a good idea. It's just a form of novacaine and stings a little, but then the IV won't hurt going in.
Another idea, since you've had problems with IV's hurting in the past....I also find IV's in my hand to be painful. Not high on the pain scale, but enough to really annoy me. I now request that I don't have the IV put in my hand, but somewhere from my wrist up. The nurse/Dr. will usually agree to this, UNLESS they anticipate other problems, such as multiple IV placements or if you have difficult veins to find. I agree also with the previous poster...drink lots of fluids the day before, it really will help.
Best wishes and s

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
I have also had IV's both with and without the numding medication and I thought the numbing was wonderful! just a little sting......the nurse had trouble finding a good vein and had to try another place in the same area so the numbing really helped!!
Good luck on wednesday and be sure to let us know how you are doing!

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
The medicine they give to numb before the IV is Novacaine and a tiny needle is used. It does sting just a little, but because the needle is so small, that part doesn't really hurt.
Another thing that can be used is Emla Cream. It works better if it's applied to the site about 30 minutes beforehand. When I worked Pediatrics, sometimes the doc would give the parent a script to get it and apply it themselves before coming for the procedure to the areas most likely where the IV would be started. Maybe your dr would do this for you. Only problem is, you don't know for sure where they will start the IV. Check with your dr & if s/he will prescribe it and what areas you could numb.
By the way, I learned working in the hosp that the easiest area for the patient to have an IV & not get in the way so much is the forearm (wrist - thumb side). I requested mine here when I had my hyst and the nurse was about to start it in my hand. She took care of my wishes.

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
My surgery was 2-6-02. They gave me a shot on novacaine before the IV was inserted. The novacaine shat stung a tiny bit and I didn't feel the IV at all.
Good luck to you. Joanie

IV
I agree..The IV was my scareiest part of the surgery..I did get the novacaine before they did the IV and it stung a bit but the IV didn't hurt and that was great. I have small viens and they had to heat them up with warm towels to get one to be able to put an IV in and this is the first time I"ve had an IV put in that it didn't hurt..The novacaine stings for a second but hey that's better than the pain of the IV being put in..

pre-IV local anesthesia in the arm?
Hi Melissa, I too had the numbing before the I.V. It was great. They always have trouble getting an I.V. started on me for some reason. This way, the nurse can hunt around and you won't even feel it. I'd ask for it again for sure. (This was the first time I'd ever had them do this). It just made the morning before surgery a little easier on me. Take care!
