home from hospital. ques about HRT

Surgery on Tuesday went well but he had to take both ovaries too. They were covered in endo and stuck to other organs. I cried in recovery upon hearing that news. I so wanted to at least keep one. I stll have a patch on that comes off tomorrow. He put me on Premarin. Anyone else have a good experience on it? I'm 42 so was nowhere near menopause. I feel very down about the prospect of taking hormones. I knew before surgery it was a possibility but hoped I would get to keep an ovary. I'm afraid I will never feel "normal" again. I know I'm only 3 days post op. I just feel so strange and down.

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

Hi Blondie0612, I woke up with no ovaries too. It wasn't a great surprise to me as my surgery was for suspected ovarian cancer, but since it wasn't definite, I asked my surgeon to spare ovaries if possible. He couldn't as endo left them covered in scar tissue. I was 45 and still not near menopause. I wasn't allowed any HRT for 10 days because my doc wanted to get my pathology back first. For those 10 days, I was utterly and completely down and miserable. However, once I started HRT, I felt better. I have not tried Premarin, as I wanted to stay on the bio-identical hormone route. There are plenty of women who do great on Premarin though. As for feeling strange and down, a whole lot of women feel that way in the first few weeks after surgery. First, your body has to deal with the trauma of surgery, getting anesthesia out of your system, painkillers, pain, etc. Also, even if you are taking Premarin, your body's hormones are likely fluctuating as it is getting used to the new situation. That would likely be happening even if you kept an ovary. The first few weeks are tough on everybody. I hope you feel better soon!

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

Hi Blondie0612. I had my full hysterectomy on October 9th. I knew my ovaries were being removed so I wasn't in that shock & upset stage like you. I'm sure your doctor had your best intentions in mind & removing the ovaries is just going to help you.

I've been on Premarin since the day after my surgery and I'm doing fine with it. No complications with this HRT. My first week out of the hospital has rough but I believe each day gets better.
Good luck with the Premarin & your recovery.
Hugs.....

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

I'm 43 1/2 had both ovaries removed on 10-1 I'm on no HRT I have some anxiety but its about the same as I've always had. I believe it's the trama from surgery. The medications before and after surgery and anesthesia as well as hormones trying to figure what's going on. The first few days are tough but really at 2 weeks past I'm feeling pretty good. I haven't had my first hott flash and I'm not looking forward to it. I have had a flushed face but that has happened to me before. Hang in there❤️ Better days are ahead👍

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

I'm 39 and no ovaries either and my dr didn't want HRT for me. I'm takkng Premarin vaginal cream for a couple weeks to help heal my cuff and after 3 days I'm not seeing any of the frightening side effects the papers say I should have.

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

Thanks for the replies. I hope i can tolerate it. My stepmom does a compound natural HRT cream and suggested i look i to it too. Right now i just want to get past the first 2 weeks. Im still in pain, running a low fever and am constipated from the pain meds. This has been more miserable than i thought it would be.

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

Drink lots of water use a stool softener. Colace is over the counter. Ask your Dr if that's ok for you. I've been taking 2 a day since my surgery. I only took Motrin 800 after I got home from hospital because I was so afraid of being constipated🙈

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

I just turned 31 in sept. And total hyst and both ovaries. Surgery was on oct 15 due too massive scar tissue caused by endo and ando. I am on some sort of weekely patch. So far I am doing ok as far as meno symptoms. Some night sweats and feeling hot when no one else's soes but this is has only happened 2 times since surgery. Thr pain is getting easier but I am very uncomfortable and very antsey. I am finding it very hard to sit still. I still haven't pooped.

Re: home from hospital. ques about HRT

BLTitus we had surgery on the same day :-) i still have a patch on and have had no menopause symptoms. Im almost afraid to start the Premarin. But i will give it a chance since it was $60! I finally had to give myself a saline enema this morn so i could poop. My stomach was hurting so bad from the constipation. It worked but not sure when i may "go" again. I think im going to lay off percocet. Ive drank tons of water each day and taken 2 stool softeners a day since wednesday. Pain is better for me but incision still extremely sore on the right and almost feels like it burns inside. Its not red though. Looks fine.
